i have a 97 2500 and when i start it i have to give it little gas to get it started then hold it to keep it running for a couple seconds. its acting like its not getting fuel, any help??

Is your idle speed slow also? I can't remember for sure but I think there is throttle linkage off of the pump that can get worn. It has been awhile since I worked on one though.
 
Your idle speed is probably too low. Using a little pedal to start it is not a problem unless it wants to die when you stop. If it is doing that then set the idle a little higher.
 
if I remember correctly there is a rod that comes off the pump and goes to a bracket towards the rear of the engine that the throttle cable is connected to. There are ball and socket ends on that rod that may be a little worn. You may be able to get by adjusting the rod a little.
 
You don't set the idle with the linkage. There is an idle adjustment screw for that. It's marked J in this picture. The lock nut for it is marked K. You need a 10mm box end wrench to adjust it.

This is often the result of a bad fuel return line. A common problem.
 
Could also be the fuel heater, BTDT. If you can, pull the plug on the heater and try to look in with a mirror. If it looks bubbled near the terminal, it's probably junk and leaking air. Or, just put a gob of silicone on the end of the wire and plug it back in and see if the problem goes away the next day or so. ;)
 
Mine had no bubbles or anything else visibly wrong with it, but it leaked. Just remove the thing because it's worthless anyway. That's only a two minute job.

how do you do that joe... i am interested adn what parts do i need to get for it
 
No parts necessary. Free fix. Remove the pre-filter from the bottom with a 17mm socket. Unplug the fuel heater. Remove the bolt that holds the fuel heater in place from the bottom in the middle with an 8mm allen wrench. Discard the fuel heater, the screw that held it in place, and one of the gaskets. Screw the pre-filter in place of the fuel heater using one of the gaskets and the 17 mm socket. That's all there is to it.
