I looked and didn't find a hard start thread that seemed to have the same problem as mine soo... I installed a FASS 95 pump on my truck back in april and since then my truck has been giving me a hard time starting every once in awhile(about once every 2 weeks) . Well now its becoming more like a once a day occurance. When I go to start my truck I can hear the pump kick on and then kick off and my truck starts fine but somtimes the pump won't kick off and the truck won't start. I have to turn the key back off and let it sit for about 30 seconds and then try it again. What would cause that pump to stay on like that?? I tried changing out the rely but it still does it.

When I installed my HpFp I had the dealer do a reflash. The pump was running for about 30 sec or so and after the reflash just a couple seconds. If the remember right the installation sheet with the pump should have information about the hard start issue. I went ahead and had the reflash done asap after the installation of the pump and never had any hard starts.

I've never had a FASS installed, but, with what you told makes me want to check for leaks, especially around rubber hose.

From what I gather from reading through all the threads on hard starts, it would seem that the hard starts are caused by the metering diaphragm in the VP44 having gone bad, which has too much travel due to the higher pressures of aftermarket lift pumps. For some the solution is to install a pressure switch so that the lift pump doesn't kick in until the engine is running. It seems to work fine for them. I have never had this problem though, so I am just passing along info I have gleaned over the years.

I believe that the latest version of the smarty software has this flash built in (if memory serves correctly) so if the OP can find someone with a smarty he should be able to get this flash without having to go to the dealer.
