when the truck is hot and the outside temperature is warm if you let the truck sit for a short time, half hour or less it cranks five to six times. instead of the normal bump of the key. it did this last fall consistently, but has not done it all winter in cold weather. it warmed up to 50 degrees saturday and it did it again. anyone have any ideas? no codes and fuel pressure is a steady 18psi. thanks in advance!

I'll be willing to bet that your starter is going bad. On all my trucks that I've owned when the starter was going bad It took many cranks to get the engine started when it was hot but when it was cold it fired fine. When I changed the starter there was no more problem. Hope this helps.

I had the same thing happen to me only I had to crank 10 -15 times before it would fire. It ended up being the VP 44 after I replaced everything else ( starter, crank sensor, Lift pump and ECM) No codes here either.

Sounds like you have good fuel pressure though.

Oh also this was before all the upgrades ie. BOMBS :-laf

Hope this helps,

Joe

Ditto, that exactly what happened to me. Slowly got harder and harder to start, then one day it wouldn't start. I never had any codes or any other warning signs.

If you have a steady fuel psi of 18lbs it is right in there for being too much for start-up. Too much fuel psi will cause a hard to start condition. [more cranking] There was a reflash out that tells your lift pump to pump up and kick out. [cold weather from memory]. If you fass is running steady while waiting for the grids and then into crank this is a good place to start looking.

my fuel pressure always drops to 0 before the wait to start light goes out. last fall i even waited five to ten seconds after fuel pressure dropped and still cranked long. wait a couple hours sometimes longer and truck starts normal. i have had my fass system on for over a year and a half and it just started this last fall. will one of the blue chip vp44 testers tell me if it is good or bad? i think i will have the starter rebuilt this weekend and try that. cold weather setting back in so it may be a while before i know. thanks for the help, keepem comin.
