I finally figured out why my engine decided to run so rough these last few days.

My Harmonic Damper decided to split into two pieces.

How on earth do I remove the part left on the front of the crank? I removed the two bolts, but I have no idea how to get the part that is stuck off the crank.

Any advise here would help greatly.

Has anyone seen these things split?

The rubber ring between the hub and the inertia ring does deteriorate over time and the inertia ring (outer heavy ring) can drift. There are actually four bolts that hold it on so you are only half done.

Well, I got it off. All that was left was a small piece of the backplate. The damper split off just outside the 4 bolts, and there was nothing left but a small piece of steel.

I used a brass drift, and was able to get the plate to slide, and then split into two pieces. I do not think a puller of any type would help, as there was nothing to grab.

Total PITA, but it is off.

My damper wore out on the 01 last year (but not coming apart like yours). I replaced it with a Fluidampr and noticed a tremendous improvement, smoother than stock. You should used new bolts for the new damper and be prepared, they are tight, 35lbs plus 60* IIRC. You'll need to find a way to hold the engine from rotating such as a barring tool.

The service manual calls for 92 Foot pounds for a 2001. The aftermarket damper manufacturers call for the degrees-after-tight but I would stick with what Dodge/Cummins recommends for each model truck.
