Has anybody actually done a Cummins into a Ford conversion?

Into a 1979 F250 4x4 CC Shortbed?

This is the truck I want, but Cummins is the powerplant I want so I can have real power that I can afford to drive every day (mpg).

Does one of these 6bt's fit into an older ford, specifically does the front axle give problems, or does hooking to a transmission/transfer case in the older rigs cause any show-stopper issues?

Thanks

Hi JPS, I'm still looking. I know of one I may be able to snag.

Do you know of one for sale?

I found another, within about 1 mile of my house, I was going to go ask if the owner would sell. All of the sudden, it shows up in another driveway, about 1/2 mile from my house (monument, CO).

I saw the guy outside one day, and asked him about it. He bought it running, with 110K actual miles, and little or no rust. Argggh. For $1300. The 400M had some seal rot and leaked, and it needed a carb, but all the drivetrain was nice, and the body was straight. Dang.

Oh well, I'll keep searching!

That sounds cool!

I think my dream truck would be a '71 Chevy long bed 3/4 ton 4x4 with a Dana 60 front (with an air locker) and a Sterling 10. 25 rear (with a Detroit locker), a Cummins 5. 9 12v (bombed of course!!!), a heavy duty 5speed manual transmission, and a HD T-case. I guess I'd have to paint the truck Hugger Orange:cool:

I am building mine amongst painting the house, building fences and barns and bookshelves and, well, working for a living...

Anyway I have the frame x-member notched, mounts built, and frame boxed. I am currently finishing doing the full spline shaft on the NV4500. I am using a '94 engine. Advance adapters builds an adapter to go from the NV4500 to NP205. I am running 1410 series Spicer joints on the main driveline. Then I should be able to do the final assembly of the running gear.

Rear diff is a dana 70 out of a 1 ton van (oddly enough the van rear is the same width as the front diff. ) Front diff is a dana 60 high pinion.

Next hurdle will be hydraulic clutch setup, then will look to see if I can cram the radiator, intercooler and condensor onto a custom core support which will allow me to run a hydraulic tilt front end.

Drive date keeps getting pushed back. Now I am hoping to get it ready in time to go to NC in December for the 100th aniversary of the Wright brothers flight.
