Has anybody swapped their front #39 springs for a set of #46s' ?
I'm thinking about pulling my 2" spacers out and changing springs to compensate for winch sag. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how it worked.
Thanks.

I have the 39/46or47 setup on my 3500 4x4. I still consider them soft. I am thinking of having some custom springs made that are 1" taller than stock.

I do think you will be happy with the swap.

Hey Joe,
Call up National Spring and Tire in West Virginia and ask for a set of Skyjacker 2. 5" Lift springs their perfect.
You do not need to order the trailing arms we have alot of trucks around us here without them running that spring without them I know Black Dog is and I am too their a great spring for the money and it will level your truck up perfectly!!

Yes you guys will need longer shocks but go ahead and replace the shocks we've learned that the stockers are about junk after 30,000 miles anyway just tell them 2. 5 Skyjacker springs and 2 or 4 shocks depends on if you want to do the rear at the same time!!

The springs come red, and I think they run about $105 for the pair. Shocks are around $35 a piece, that is for Skyjacker's. Good luck !

SmokinCummins/Blackdog,
I'm curious how much these longer springs actually actually raised your front ends.
I don't see in your signatures that either of you have a winch or a real heavy bumper.
Thanks.

The Skyjacker "leveling" springs raised my front end up about 2", which is a lot. No heavy accessories on the nose though. One of the best mods I`ve done. Hated the nose down look too. Heres the truck after the leveling springs. 36" tires fit & don`t rub anytime, anywhere.

Joe, Don`t bother with the D/C springs. They probably wouldn`t lift the front much, if at all. Lots of good aftermarket companies are producing springs & leveling kits (like you have) to address this problem.

A long time ago, I swapped out the 046/039 combination in my 94 for the +2" skyjacker springs. The Skyjackers are wound from 039 stock with a progressive pitch in the winding. This has worked well on my truck with a heavy Reunel bumper/Warn M12000 winch. The front sits about 1" higher with my camper installed; 1. 25" taller without the camper. The progressive wind maintains a reasonable ride quality, while limiting deflection as the load on the spring increases.

Changing the springs is a driveway project that is easier if you have two floor jacks to manipulate the axle, and some HD jack stands or cribbing to support the truck. The front driveshaft, steering links, track bar, and stabilizer bar should be disconnected, but you will not need to disconnect the suspension arms.

Tips: Change the passenger side first, and let the weight of the diff case help you on the driver side. We did this when we first installed the springs and then forgot the trick when we replaced the front axle. Sue and I had a difficult time getting the tall passenger side spring reinstalled. A bottle jack can help press the axle down to get enough clearance to install the taller springs.

FWIW: taller springs will offset the front axle about 3/8" to the driver side of the truck. The offset never seemed to hurt or help the steering on my truck, but the added angle on the track bar caused the upper end to fail repeatedly. I finally replaced it with a DT trackbar which has a heim joint on the upper end, and is adjustable to re-center the axle. It did not help or hurt the steering, but has survived a severe pounding off-road. With taller springs, check the double cardan joint on the front driveshaft (top end at the transfer case output) for binding. Mine would bind and make noise at full axle droop until I installed a reverse cut front axle with a higher pinion. A hard bind under heavy throttle can break the c-joint or damage the transfer case.

Additional notes:

If you like your tires, the front alignment should be checked any time suspension components are changed.

Taller front spring make the rear appear to sag when the bed is loaded. I had to add leaves and helper springs to the rear to keep the headlights out of the trees when the camper is installed and the utility bed is full of gear (loaded GVW around 10400 pounds). The added height on both ends keeps the 245/70R19. 5 (33. 4" tall) tires clear of the suspension and body when the axles are articulated.
