In New York City, we just started to test opacity (smoke density) in Diesel trucks over 8000 Lb GVW, and that means me (in Nov. ) and anyone else in the NYC Metro area. Being a state inspector, I have been doing tests on Heavy trucks and the Pass rate is good. I want to do the pump and Injectors on my rig, but don't want to start huffing. I did test a 12,000 Hour tired 6-71 powered smoker (blue and black) and it passed so I would think a ram would have to be real bad to not pass. Just something to think about.

In the Greater Vancouver, B. C. , Canada we have had exhaust emissions testing for a number of years now. My 92 Ram has always passed. #ad

Wayne M. , I am also a State DMV inspector, I work for the State. We are waiting for our machine to test diesels. I am about to "upgrade" my 93 D350 with PW injectors and a 14 cm turbohousing. I am concerned with the test for smoke opacity. Perhaps I will have to turn my injector pump down after injectors+turbo housing. I am still at stock settings. Do you think we will pass the test?Rick.

Rick, The way my truck runs (stock) I don't see a problem. Before the test you actually do clean- out snaps. I'm sure the limits for opacity are curved depending on an age factor but the number i've seen has been 40% and there have been no failures yet. 40 has to look REAL bad! Are you out of the metro aera? I thought you didn't have to test up there. What agency are you with? I am a City employee.

Wayne M. , I work for NYS Parks, and I live/work on LI south shore. Thanks for the info on emissions test. Were you at TDR rally in Southampton in July? Later Rick.

Wayne, I just had the test. Passed with an average 14. 3% with very slight exhaust smoke showing at 3000 RPM. >40% = fail. Totally stock 12v motor. I think clouds of black soot out of the pipe would >40% and fail, otherwise what's the point of the test ?

Hi Rick, no, I wasn't at the Buzz chew show, how was it? that weekend has always been a busy one for me. I was really looking forward to going to the Diesel nats @ Englishtown this weekend just to hang out but now I have to work, guess we'll see.

FYI on the Smoke testing, We just had in an older mid '80's Mack and it Failed. The threshold was 55% (I guess the limit does go up with age, but won't apply to us) and failed @ 77%, this thing was HUFFING! we're in the process of doing injectors, timing, and making sure the AFC is ok then we will try again. 77% looks real bad at the stack.

Wayne M, The TDR rally at Buzz Chew was real good. One guy brought a 1927 Cummins stationary engine sounded/looked good. Another guy showed his new 2000? 4 door + extended cab all black custom truck! Thanks for the inspection test info, I have several 6 cyl. Macks that will likely fail the test.

Geez, everyone gang up on the Macks. #ad
They were built before pollution control, and good air/fuel control LOL. #ad

WHOA!!!!!!!!!! I never did slam any Mack Trucks! I was only telling my experience with the smoke meter. However they do like to puff and that don't make 'em bad in my book. If anything, it might make me a better mechanic after I make it pass! They have to be the most reliable pieces the City owns! Of course that goes for the pre electronic trucks!
