Help On Injector Replacement

Hello,

I'm a new member but I've been watching you all for quite some time...

Yesterday while driving up a fairly steep hill I heard a loud !POP! and then my truck was making a loud "wind tunnel" like noise.

I let up off the gas (diesel?) and noticed my turbo boost was almost zero and my EGT's were climbing.

I bought this truck new and have only had it for 4 months (11800 miles). I was quite scared that I blew the turbo or perhaps had a fuel injection pump problem. I stopped, got out, and checked everything that I had installed but I couldn't see a problem. I continued to drive home (very slowly for 45 miles. ) When I got home I pulled of the intake hose from the airbox to the turbo and thank God the turbo looked intact (at least to my untrained eye).

The next morning I called Banks because I wasn't sure that I wanted to bring my truck in with their computer hooked up to it. John at Banks called me back and new exactly what it was, the loud pop was that my boost levels were higher than stock (30psi now) and the intercooler hose had popped off of the intercooler due to excess pressure. It seems that Dodge doesn't tighten it enough for my boost levels. He said that it wasn't a common problem but he sure had the answer right away.

Has anyone else seen this before? There are trucks BOMB'd more than mine out there.

B,

This is not too uncommon. The tightness of the clamps on the intercooler and supporting plumbing seems to be a hit-and-miss item. I know of several folks out there in TDR land who have done the same exact thing. One comes to mind - he was out in a field pushing his newly BOMBed 2500, and blam! The fellow limped back home, with much smoke a cussing.

on a 94 with cam plate they would creep out from under clamps---cleaned hose etc with brake cleaner and retighten. would then hold sortof.

Seen that alot at the truck dealership I work at! A big Class 8 truck running up on the dyno and all of a sudden KKK-BLAM!!!!. They love sticking the new guy down by the engine to "Keep an eye on things"!

Like Craig said, I know of a diesel juvenile
who decided one day to provide unsolicited rototilling services where a 5 acre parcel was concerned. It turns out that the dilenquent in question also suffered one of these cac hose dismemberments. Actually I have it on super 8. The sound of the hose retreating is audible, and the buildup of smoke in the neighborhood is noticable.

Caution: Loss of boost will result in big time egt! If you suffer this fate, get out of the pleasure pedal!

More importantly, if this happens you're sucking unfiltered air into the intake manifold (bad). Get out and retighten ASAP (it's happened to me too). If it continues to pop off, then lightly sand the polished areas the hose clamps onto so there is increased friction and less creep-out of the hose.

If they pop off you can usually put them back on by hand then drive home casually w/o punching up the boost. Atleast that's what I did till I made it to the toolbox. No big problem. Just don't drive with a post-filter hose disconnected.
