My friend's 1998 2500 4X4, 12 valve Auto trans, has a problem. He has 35,000 EASY miles on it and the number three piston rod bearing is gone. He took the truck into the local 5 star due to a slight knocking noise only when cold. The dealer switched injecters around and started it cold. The noise was still there. The dealer said they have isolated the noise as coming from the number three piston rod bearing. Any thoughts?????

I have never heard of a rod, crank, piston or bearing problems on a 12 valve truck. Bone stock or 600HP.

No Fram filter. He said he uses the local Jiffy lube and they use Penzoil filters and oil. Myself, I would not let Jiffy lube or any such outfit get near my truck. I change my own oil, Mopar filters and Delo 400 oil.

Pennzoil filters probably are about as good as Fram filters #ad
. I don't know what others think of Pennzoil but I put it in the same class as Fram.

I would insist on a teardown and failure analysis by Cummins, then if it turns out to be the filter, go after Pennzoil and/or Jiffylube.

He took it to jiffy lube? No wonder, did they use the right type of oil? I doubt they did, and now a bad engine bearing. Hope its under warranty.
 
The dealer is going to put in a new short block under warranty. It's his selling dealer and they are pretty easy to get along with. I would be real curious to see what the bottom end looks like with the pan off. I'm not sure how often he changes his oil, but Jiffy lube type places are not my choice.
