I don't think you will be able to find anyone who has installed an Aisin or 68RE and my guess is it simply isn't possible to do it. You could bolt one up to the bell housing and drive shaft but the new transmissions are computer controlled so I don't think you would be able to make it function properly.

An Allison from a FL which had been previously installed behind a Cummins ISB might be possible. I don't know how much computer control they required or used.

The days of easy bolt in parts swapping are gone with the increasing and expanding use of computers to control them.

My nephew, who's specialty is installing late model engines/drivetrains in older cars, has access to a 'computer whiz' guy that makes computers for a lot of different applications like this.

I don't know if he can make one for this particular swap, but he does do a wide variety of computer/non-computer problem solving with his skills.

If you are serious about doing something like this, get back to me with more specific information, and I'll find out what this guy has to say.

Destroked.com has a stand alone computer. I want to know if anyone has done the swap successfully and what the results were.

One drawback of the Allison is the OD ratios aren't as tow-friendly as the 68RFE, gearing is too tall. The first OD is almost as steep as the 47RE OD so you'd be dealing with almost as much revving/lugging issue as you do with the stock trans.

I don't think they have a stand alone computer box for the 68re yet. The 68re is supposed to be programed to the 6. 7 only.

But it would be sweet to put the 68re in the older CTDs so hopefully some one will come up with box to do it.

The best and easiest transmission upgrade to modernize a 12 valve would be a six speed manual, either NV-5600 or G-56. Either of them would be fairly simple.

so you get an extra gear before the 47's OD and an extra gear after?! sign me up! I'd love to be around 2000rpm at 90 :)

I looked at the gear vender units but a lot of people that have had them behind a modified Cummins have eaten them up despite the factory's claims of torque handling capabilities.

With all of the Allison conversion stuff hitting the market I thought it might be a viable option when I blow this P. O. S. 47re up. Even if I spend the $6,000 to build my 47re up and another $3000 on a gear vendor OD it will still shift goofy and put half of the power to the ground when the converter is unlocked.

I had an Allison in my last truck and it started to pull as soon as you got on the go peddle. You didnt have to wait for it to rev to 2000rpm before it start to transfer power.

I wouldn't disagree with your opinion of the 47RE. I had a 48RE in an '06 and didn't love it either but a full tilt towing rebuild by one of the good rebuilders using parts from one of the good suppliers will perform pretty well and they are tough.

A fellow by the name of James Northrum, an experienced TX rebuilder, rebuilt mine with all the high dollar DTT parts and made it a strong performer. They are not without their quirks though, even after a very expensive rebuild.
