Has anyone used both auxillary oil ports?

I'm wondering if there's actually any room between the heater core tube and the oil pressure port on top of the filter mount closest to the engine. NOT the one that's directly over the filter, but the one that's offset close to the engine. Seems like it's almost completely blocked by the heater core line.

Has anyone successfully installed anything in that port?

For a while I was using both ports on the oil filter housing, it is close but you can get to it if you are creative. Now I am just using the one port, but have a T-fitting so I can take oil pressure and temperature readings. The alternator bracket is very close, and I just clear it with the sender. The two oil fittings are for reading oil pressure pre and post filter, I suppose for diagnostic reasons?

Y-Knot,

You were actually able to fit a sending unit or some sort of NPT fitting down into that port (the one on the engine side)?

I'm trying to fit an Isspro 1/8 inch temperature sending unit, which has a 3/4 inch diameter hex-head on it.

Well, looking things over carefully last night I came to the conclusion that my temperature sender is way too large to fit in there. I can't even fit a 7/16" socket over the factory pipe plug because the heater core line is too close!

The real root of my problem is that by the time I install a tee-fitting for my temperature sender, the sender is too far away from the oil port to read much above 140 degrees, even after a long highway drive. Ideally, the sender needs to be mounted directly in one of the ports. Since I also run an oil pressure sending unit, it makes sense to use both ports.

Since I can't use both ports, I'm thinking of making my own "manifold" out of some square-bar aluminum that will allow me to place the temperature sender very close to the oil port, and also provide a port for oil pressure.

Let me know when you get it sorted out what temps you are seeing, my oil is between 215 and 230 degrees depending on how the truck is being used. Seems high to me but no one else has a oil temp gauge on a 3rd gen that I know of. I have posted about the temp before.

No, you can not just screw a sending unit into the port, there is no room for it. If you want to use the back port on the filter housing, you have to screw in a AN flare to pipe adapter fitting, and attach a oil line. The line will allow you to gain the distance you need, and then just install the sender you need. I told you, you had to be creative. Some may want to monitor the back port, for most it's to much trouble, but it can be done. At one time I was thinking about taking a line out from the filter housing and running it to a log, their I would mount all my sensors in one neat and convenient spot. I have sence postponed that ideal, and left go enough alone. Maybe later on a boring day?
