it only blows cold air about 40% of the time. However, when I turn it to max a/c (which I rarely use), it will immediatly start blowing cold air, which makes me think it may not be freon (or whatever it's called now). Any ideas?

Does the compressor cycle on and off constantly? You can get a cheap refill kit at walmart, comes with a gauge to check the level, real easy to do. A common problem also seems to be the blend door actuator, that is what I replaced along with recharging the system. Good luck.

I was going to recharge my system and didn't know which fitting to use to fill the system. Do I use the one up by the battery/radiator? My A/C only gets cool after 15-30 minutes during the day but blows good cold air in the morning or at night. Should I suck it up and take it to the dealer?

To recharge you use the port towards the back. I would just invest in the recharge kit, only around $30, that way you can check it and do it yourself. Much easier and faster than the dealer. The dealer will just put a thermometer in front of the vent and tell you it is blowing cold enough, they dont even check the system to see how charged it is, then they charge you $50 deductible. The service manager told be the cut off temp was ;) 78', which is high if you ask me. If it comes out at or below that temp they wont check the charge. I then took it straight to walmart got a charge kit, went home and filled it since it was almost empty, now blowing cold with no problems.

Oh and if your confused on which port to use the recharge hose will only fit on one port.

If you refill it yourself do yourself and a mechanic a favor and do NOT use anything with a sealant in it.

Sealants will void your warranty. Any good mechanic shop will check for sealants before working on your system. If they find sealants most will say they don't want to work on your system (will void warranty of their equipment as well).

After sealants are installed the only way to get rid of them is to replace EVERYTHING - which of course is expensive.

There have been some recent posts about a/c systems regarding problems, pressures, etc - check them out too!

Yes, I work on a/c systems.
