I don't know what they changed exactly. It goes where it's pointed; not chasing it all over the road. When driving there's some adjustment for crown of course (4x4 solid axle -- that's how it is); but it isn't a 'pull' and you aren't chasing it back and forth. Just point and hold. Big improvement IMO. But that's my experience; maybe I just lucked out this time. Test drive yours before you take it. I test drove two I wouldn't have taken home until they proved they could be fixed (not a good thing for a 'new' truck). One someone slammed a curb or something; nasty front end vibration. The other some bonehead probably went hot rodding or four wheeling in and toasted the syncros in the transmission. Couldn't find a gear to save your life. Moral of the story; try before you buy.
Thanks Mark, but being you had two bad experiences to one, my guess is not much has changed. Test drove one, definetly quieter, but steering still felt the same way as the "01!" I've had the opportunity to test drive a Chev D/A and a Ford PS and I am really leaning toward the Chev. Want to go back to an automatic transmission, spouse and I are traveling more and she has a hard time with the ol' Ram. No decisions made yet, but close. Thanks again for your input.
After driving quite a few of the new trucks I can say the steering is greatly improved over previous models. No clunks when going over bumps, no free side to side play and it tracks like a champ even on severe crowned roads. Maybe they finally got it right after all these years
I checked out an '03 3500 4x4 and they have a new heavy trackbar. Finally eliminated the cheap &%$##@ of &#^@ the rest of have put up with for many years. It looks like they have the same steering gear though and I was disapointed to see that it wasn't even painted.
