Ford to Cost Navistar 380 Jobs

Never reaching operating tempature

OH MY!

How could the "Cummins superiority purists" EVER accept an engine that is NOT an inline design - AND a "light duty" one to boot?

What would be left in our arsenal to razz the Ford and GM crowd about? :-laf :-laf

This is different - Two inline 4-cylinders working together :-laf

Because it won't be in a "real" truck...

That is great! i sure hope it happens! It ia about friggin time. We have long needed a decent size diesel SUV and a smaller than 2500 vehicle in this country. Would be a nice addition in the 300M also!!!!

I'm not wild about the whole 'V' type diesel thing, but I understand packaging considerations and performance required in modern personal-use vehicles. The 'V' configuration would not keep me from buying a personal-use 1/2-ton pickup. A 'V'-type diesel would keep me from buying a 3/4-ton or larger work truck, however.

I personally would prefer the choice of diesels in a 1500 Ram but I doubt that this would become reality. Why wouldn't a V-6 diesel with a mere 455 lb. -ft. of torque be sufficient in a 1/2-ton truck? The V-6 diesel would be my choice if I was a fleet buyer due to superior fuel economy over the V-8 diesel.

The V-6 was tested in the current-design Durango, and will probably do very well there. But drop that V-6 in the Dakota and DC will sell every one they can screw together. That would be an absolute tow monster, and the Dakota Quad would be perfect for a family with 2 smaller kids and a travel trailer or small boat.

I don't see the positioning of the V-8... unless there is a serious economy difference, I'd take the 325/610 straight-six in a 2500 over the 260/597 V-8 in the 1500, just for the stronger frame. I'd feel far more confident that the running gear of the 2500 could handle the torque - the 1500 would need SRT-10 running gear just to keep the tires from shredding.

There are numbers floating around on the fuel economy of this engine in the 1500. Something like 19-20 mpg city and 24-25 highway. This is a substantial improvement over the Hemi equipped Ram 1500. I don't know about that 597lb-ft though. All of the info I've seen has the engine rated for 300 hp and 460 lb-ft

well kc for you and me and everyone else here at tdr have grown used to handling a bigger truck. plus we are more comfortable w/ the more solid ride of the 25/3500 trucks. but in reality i think that the v8 diesel in a half ton would sell very well at least in my area i see a lot of 1/2 tons pulling way more then their truck is desinged for but seem to think they only need a 1/2 ton. the ones i talk to dont want a 3/4 ton pickup and thats why they have these 1/2 tons but almost all of them would love to have a small powerful little diesel in them. so me personaly i think it would sell very well but only time will tell. just my . 02
