Although probably not a good idea if you can help it, but....

I unknowingly drove for thousands of miles on a completely dead lift pump(read 0psi)... . Truck always ran like a top. I only found out it was dead when I couldn't prime it after a fuel filter change. That was fun getting it started!

When my first one went south I too only found out at a filter change. However my Injector pump was soon to follow. DC covered the Injector Pump under 100,000 mile warrenty. Now I'm protected with gauges.

My 2001 has 32K miles on it and is running great. With all this fuss with lift pumps I would like my 5 star dealer to test it. How do I approach him??? Do I fake some kind of problem?

If you don't want to pay out of pocket, I advise you to come up with a reason for them to test it;)

Dealer Lift Pump Replacement

Bombero, you may want to check my post regarding how my dealer handled the lift pump replacement on a Y2K w/ 45K miles.

Reading the sheet I received when I picked up the truck.

" Driveability, runs, poor, lacks power... . performed fuel pressure test, FAILED, ... ordered pump, replaced pump, WARRANTY, ... TOTAL INVOICE $0. 00.

But I have to tell that my dealer is not your dealer, and my dealer will not say the same everytime, though so far we have been able to come to agreement on everything but one issue, and that involves misleading advertising on service specials (oil change on my truck CAUSE THEY KNOW IT AND IT IS IN THEIR FILES, then try to not honor because diesel oil capacity versus gasser oil capacity). Having the knowledge that comes from the guys on this site is invaluable in those "coming to agreement issues".

So I took the advise of TDR members and do my own service. I discovered the low fuel pressure with Briarhoppers guage setup, EASY TO USE, and they took my word and ordered the pump so that it was there when the truck went in.

The other guys that have responded are right, but get the guage(s) and you know yourself, and you can check it periodically for future issues which I am doing per my other post on the new numbers after the pump change.

GOOD LUCK, but with BriarHoppers guage you will know for a known cost, PEANUTS!!!!!!!!

The magic word to push the lift pump button at my dealer is "hard starting"... . when mine began to fail and I promptly hiked it in for replacement no less than 3 different people asked me if it was hard to start... .

Gauges are a wonderful thing-that's all I've got to say!

Thanks for the tips guys, I don't have the time to mess with it right now so I was hoping I could push this to the back burner.
