Folks,

I know there's been posts on this before. However I would like to know how many of you are pulling a trailer behind your 5er. I would like to pull my boat but would be approx. 72' total length! I relize this is way over the limit for my state of 60'. BUT! I see plenty of "double bottom" pullers on the freeway that have to over the max length. Most people you talk to say that if the set-up looks safe, the highway patrol will leave you alone.

Any thoughts?

And how many of you are actually over the max length.

thanks,

BPS

I guess you really have to decide if you want to be a gamblin' man, will the cop stop you or not? People have posted on this site about members who are legal in their state and then go on a trip to another state that has a shorter limit. They get stopped in the other state and then told that they have to disconnect and tow them separate as they are over limit. What a drag!

I tow a bass boat behind my fifth wheel and am over length here in Oklahoma (which is 70 ft. ). Have only done it few times and have had no problems so far. I don't really like it since you can't see the boat when you are going down the road and I'm over the GCWR weight but do it anyway. A Texas trooper told me that being too long was the last thing he would give someone a ticket for, but who knows what the next trooper would do. Have talked to a lot of guys towing double and none have ever been stopped and measured. See it being done quite a lot here and in Texas.

However, I recently ran across a Missouri State Trooper at an RV park . He had a short, short fifth wheel trailer and a large bass boat on a tandem axle trailer behind it. He said he had the short trailer so he would not be over the length limit for Missouri (think he said it was 65 ft. ). He said his concern was for civil liability in case of an accident rather than any trouble with the law for being over length. He also said he had a friend who was an attorney who pulled doubles who was over length. Based on what I have seen, I do not see a problem, at least right now in this part of the country, with law enforcement. The issue to me appears to be the risk of having an accident and being over length and overweight. That is a decision we you have to make.
