How do I get into Hot Shot hauling or car hauling. I'd love to do it and am willing to get a trailer but how do I get started, has anyone else tried?

I already have commercial insurance for my day job with it, what other kind of insurance would I need?

My cell # is 352-895-1429. If you want to invest a dime I can give you some info. But for starters : A class "A" CDL, IRP Tags, At least a 36' GN trailer, You'll need a lease to get your IRP plates or your own authority. Authority is easy..... the 10K per yr insurance is a bit ruff for some. Oh yea, log books, fire ext, DOT card, CAB card, Daily inspections, Stoping at the scale houses, If you run general freight, Tarps, Binders, G70 chain, etc. A DOT approved sleeper bearth. DOT has mandated a 75" sleeping rule a fine from 250-1,000. 00 per fine !!! IFTA, HUT in NY, Lots of driving Fla-Calif. in 2 days Which can not be done legal. I made clear in 2000 AFTER exp & fuel 56,000. 00. The 92 is for sale, The 2000 is running hard, and the FL-70 is the best one todate. Just my $. 02 Mike

Ever thought of hauling other people's trailers? ie: travel trailers, horse trailers, mobil office trailers, etc. That stuff has to be delivered by someone?

That would be great to, do I just contact manufacturers? Most of them I've called around here have contracts with people. A few guys at the lake recommended hauling boats for some of the "affluent" boat owners that can't haul a 30' with their Lexus.

From your signature it looks like you have air brakes on the 2000 Dodge. What was involved with that conversion.

Air brakes would be great, I'd love to have them. Mike is that what you have or are you talking about the FL70?

Yes the 2000 does have air brakes. It was a conversion done by a guy in the Yukon terr. in NW Canada. its a highly modified vac pump. normally used for vac over hdy trailer brakes. its a somewhat prototype. Seems to work great and has passed every DOT inspection to date. Not avail to the public yet. But there are conversions out on the market for the Dodges to have air brakes. On another note : Morgan and Bennet are pretty much one way loads. Alot of dead head miles. I have my own DOT ICC authority now and am now running my 2 trucks on our own. Insurance is 16 K per yr..... not cheap. . but no more 78% pay. Just have to be strick on collecting. Its worth it. But a lot of work. The FL-70 is the better of the trucks with the 335 hp motor. No dising the Dodge. Just my $0. 02 worth

Morgan Drive Away is a good place to start. They have a lot of 'FEES' that I did not expect. So if you don' tow for them quite a bit it didn't seem like it would pay.

MY 2 cents.

I ,too, am interested in a "hot-Shot" addition to my business. I already pay the piper for insurance, have ifta authority, icc, mc, dot, kyu, ect. Does anyone know of good leads in the greater cincinnati reigon. I am also interested in palletized loads up to 2 pallets or 6000 lbs. in the bed of my ram. I used to do "express delivery" before. It is good money, but the carrier got 35%. avg of 1. 35/mile.

Have a freind who has a 29' stock trailer. He hangs around the stock sales and puts his cards on the bulletin boards. He hauls a couple of loads a week and does not jump through any legal hoops. Just a farmer hauling his stock to and from his farm or for a freind. He does have farm plates. All is profit except for the fuel prices.

I had thought of doing this same thing with my 1 ton. I know I would have to do some major BOMBing on my 93 to get it up to par. That, or sell it and get a 3/4 ton to drive. I see here there is a lot of legal BS involved, which is no surprise. How much do you guys normally get? By mile, %, or otherwise? Does it pay off in the long run to do it full time? Time away from home is no big deal yet, though my fiancee would like me home every minute she is. I would like to do it for a few years to make some good money fast. Is that possible? I had thought of hauling trailers from mfgr, or delivering them. Or the livestock thing. Any ideas? I turn 22 this week, so cant get a CDL driving job just yet. (Dmed ins companies)

I can tell you guys this, keep your day job and stay away from trucking. If you like long, long, long hours, bad weather, idiot drivers,DOT,ICC,STATE boys, high diesel prices, and low pay by all means do it. I got out of trucking in 85 and have looked back a few times. I do like the looks, sound, and feel of a good rig,its in the blood. Dad,brothers, and I have all owned our own for as long as I can remember. I work for a company that sells petroleum products and my freinds come into the terminal on a regular basis. Anytime I miss trucking I just go over and talk to em. I come away with the feeling that I made the right decision.

It is OK to haul for freinds or make a quick buck under the table. But when you consider going legal and making money. Remember freight rates for long haul trucking have not seen a significant raise in more than 30 years. Everything else has gone up though. Along with the regs, rules, and insurance. It looks like fun but think again.

After all my recent research I'd have to agree with you. The only extra I will do is cash here and there for short hauls. I will have to go legal for work but I get a totally different pay arrangement there. Unless you have a contract that is too sweet to pass up you should probably heed the advice of Champagne.

I've heard of guys who haul travel trailers from the factory to the RV dealers. Lots of Manuacturers in the midwest.

I was told they tow 'em out one at a time and stay in motels, as they cannot use the trailer (no naps, no potty and no cold beer!). Paid by the run. Puts lots and lots of miles on their pickups and sell them at around 300K and buy a new replacement.....

Interesting... . but I'll keep my day job... #ad

I too checked on making an extra dollar. My insurance guy is a friend and neighbor, one house over. He said it would be very expensive just guessing(2000-3000) a year. 42 year old clean record. I wanted to pull yachts and cigar boats to Florida from a dealer in Houston. He said I need a million dollar bond and a 100,000 worth of cargo insurance before I hook onto one. To make money you wold have to be a full timer. With me wanting to do it part time and in the summer when school is out I don't see how I could make anything.
