Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Have no 1st gear and overdrive on 47RE

My buddy's truck is having transmission problems. He just bought the truck.

'99 Cummins 47RE, 4x4.



When he first got it it only had 3rd gear and that was it. He changed out the PCM with one that he knew worked and nothing changed. We then changed out the batteries for some fresh ones and it got 2nd gear back. So now he is still missing 1st & 4th. The truck has been like this since the first day he got it. The previous owner is no help with what it is.



Took it to a shop right after he got it to get the computer hooked up to it and it showed to be in limp mode.



So then he took it to a transmission shop and he diagnosed it as a PCM problem and that is why he had the PCM changed out.



So the next thing done was 2 new batteries and that yielded him to get 2nd gear back, but thats it.



The only extras that are on it is 44" tires so the speedometer is way off and it has a Superchips "D" box on it.





Is there anyone that can point us out in a direction to start back at for the problem?

What happens when you take the Superchips "D" box off? I read somewhere the Superchip D box is a rebadged Ez Edge. I always say return the electronics to stock to diag. a problem.



What does the Trans fluid look like? Dark Brown, smell like an electrical fire? that is an indication of burnt trans parts.
