When I start my truck up first thing in the morning I hear a ticking sound but it goes away in about a minute. Has anyone experienced this sound ? I not too concerned I'm just checking if this is normal. 43,000 miles and I love this truck, avg MPG 18. 5.

It's normal, all the auto equipped trucks do it. It's the vaccum pump doing it's thing for the cruise control.

Mine does it every morning or when it has sat for a while.

First thing in the morning i think the sounds your hearing is just

the valves, ECT... before the engine gets a FULL coating of oil...

very normal.

Thought the only way an '03 has a vacuum pump is if you added the Jacobs brake kit! By the way Rank Ram , still enjoying that Magnaflow set up ?

Yes the muffy is great! I still miss the sound of my 99 though.

I'm sure the cruise still needs vaccum though, I can't remember the particulars about the pump that I'm talking about.

The Jake is a whole different animal I'm talking about the louder than lift pump buzzing that you hear on the auto equipped trucks before you actually start the truck every morning.

Don't I look like an IDIOT right now!

Someone will bail me out though. LOL

I thought the cruise on 3G's was electronic, not vacuum operated. There's another thread talking about the Catcher ECM and cruise being fixed by a needle valve, but someone with an '02 tore theirs apart and it looks like that's when they started with the electronic cruise... not to say you're wrong, just would like someone to clarify for sure.

On the '03s, the cruise control is electronic on the manual transmissions. The automatics still use the vacuum operated cruise control with a cable. The electric vacuum pump is located on the passenger side, above the fender, between the battery and the firewall.

I notice in the manual that the Auto info is in with the gassers. That must mean that the Manual transmission is the only "REAL" truck! :D

Excuse me but... REAL MEN drive trucks with AUTOMATICS! None of that "playing with the stick to figure which gear you should be in while in bumper to bumper traffic on the 405 at 4pm. It also frees up one hand to gesture other guys driving Fords on the highway!

What does the cable connect to, the go pedal?

Also, real men use bolt actions... ... dangit, where's the duck and run smily?? :p

My truck did the same thing when it was brand new. Don't worry it's nothing a couple thousand mi did'nt fix.

Yes. The cable from the vacuum servo connects to the throttle linkage which includes the accelerator pedal cable and the transmission throttle valve cable.
