I got my muffler and pipe the other day and will try to get it on the truck tonight. It is the kit from MBRP that is just the muffler since the factory exhaust is 4 inch. My questions is, do I need to worry about cutting anything to fit, or is it a easy swap? Also, how hard was it to get the old muffler off, did you have to cut it off? Thanks for any help. :)

It was pretty easy, when I got my muffler out of the box, along with the offset pipe. I put the two pieces together and measured the length of the pipe and muffler over all. Then subtracted the amount that the pipe slides in at both ends. I noticed that with the kit there was enough lenght to cut out the muffler past both clamps so you didn't have to fight trying to take the factory joints apart. I then cut the tail pipe right behind the muffler and measured from the cut to the front of the muffler (actually pipe) and marked where my pipe needed to be cut. Then removed the stock muffler, and tail pipe, next I installed the new muffler with the offset pipe, making sure that I had the dimples inside the muffler pointing the right way. And then reinstalled the tail pipe, after checking to make sure that the tail pipe was positioned correctly and I had enough clearence everywhere I clamped all the joints. I used the band clamp style rather than the U-bolt style, they are a lot better to work with. I did have to cut off one of the hangers that was welded to the muffler and move it to make it work better for me. Hopefully you won't need to. Anyway good luck and hope this helps.

My MBRP install

I have a 4. 5 QC short bed and left the Cat on. I had a hard time getting the joints apart on the tail piece and also at the front of the muffler. It seems there is a spot welded locating tab on both joints. The standard muffler clamps are also tightened enough to deform the adjoining pipes that they almost lock together. I chisled, hammered and beat on them. I finally used my reciprocating saw and sawed through just the outer pipe in front of the muffler clamp deformation to relieve the interference. I removed the old muffler and tail piece as a unit. My install was easy but I reccommend using the wide stainless band clamps instead of the old u-clamps, so that any future replacement or mod is a breeze. Hope this helps.

MMcKenzie I've heard people complain about too much drone with MBRP exhaust, but I think in those cases it was their complete exhaust system. Not sure about the muffler & pipe kit.

When I had my '03 I replaced the stock muffler with a 4" straight through muffler and a PSD intermediate pipe that I got from DDP (Diesel Power Products in Pasco, WA). It worked out good, had some drone though but not bad.

Thanks for the info Vaughn. I had the full kit on my 2001 without any drone that I could tell. I will post the result of this kit when I get it put on. :)
