I changed my fuel filter in my 2008 2500 today.

The cannister got away from me and i spilled a bit of fuel.

When I was done I squirted the running gear down with the pressure washer at a low setting.

When I drove the truck the speedo didn't work, likewise the engine brake.

I also had a CEL and the ABS and Brake icons lit up on the dash.

Reader produced three codes, P0501 , U1412 and P0501 pd with and odd little symbol like a dumbell.

P0501 translates to speed sensor, which makes sense. I could find no mention of U 1412 .

Any Ideas out there?

You didn't say where or on what you spilled diesel fuel or where you sprayed with the pressure washer.

It seems likely that your codes are a result of wetting an electrical component with the pressure washer. Perhaps if you wait 24 hours whatever got wet will dry out and the problem will disappear.

For ten years I've had a young man with a mobile car wash rig washing my trucks and wife's car. He has always sprayed under the hoods to prevent build up of dirt and grime. I've never experienced a problem as a result.

I let the truck sit in my driveway for a couple hours and then drove back to my shop.

Lo and behold the speedo and engine brake began to work. Intermittently at first but by the time I had driven the nine miles to my shop they were working fine. Also by the time I arrived at the shop the ABS and brake indicators had gone out.

My MIL or CEL icon is still present but that may be a question of operating cycles until it clears.

My OBD still reads the PO501 and U1412 codes as well but all the bad behaviour.

I directed the water spray (at low pressure mind you ) to the axle and trailing arm which caught the worst of the fuel spill. I briefly squirted the area around the fuel filter cannister, But then thought better of it and abandoned the idea in favor of evaporation.

I failed to mention my truck is a 4WD unit and I generally crank the wheels to the right to afford access to the filter.

at 65,000 miles I'm preparing for the egr valve / cooler procedure and crank case vent filter. The story in issue 75 was quite timely .

Thanks for the responses gentlemen.

Well, more than twenty-four hours have passed. I've had no repeat of the troubles. I'll have to accept that it just didn't like being sprayed in the particular manner that I sprayed it.

Still, I would very much like to know what a U1412 code indicates.

U1412-IMPLAUSIBLE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL RECEIVED

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The ABS Module sends vehicle speed information over the CAN C Bus circuit to the ECM.

When Monitored:

Ignition on.

Set Condition:

The ECM gets an implausible signal over the CAN C circuit from the ABS Module. The circuit is continuously monitored. One Trip fault.

Possible Causes

CAN C BUS CIRCUIT SHORTED

CAN C BUS CIRCUIT OPEN

ABS MODULE

ECM

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure).

1. ACTIVE DTC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Ignition on, engine not running.

2. With a scan tool, read DTCs.

Is the U1412-IMPLAUSIBLE VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL RECEIVED active at this time?

Yes

Go To 2

No

Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure).

2. U0001-NO COMMUNICATION ON THE CAN C BUS CIRCUIT IS ACTIVE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Continue reading DTCs.

Is the U0001-NO COMMUNICATION ON THE CAN C BUS CIRCUIT ACTIVE at this time?

Yes

(Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Totally Integrated Power (TIPM) - Diagnosis and Testing) for the U0001-NO COMMUNICATION ON THE CAN C BUS CIRCUIT diagnostic procedure.

No

Go To 3

3. ABS MODULE IS ACTIVE ON THE CAN C BUS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. With the scan tool, select ECU View.

2. Verify that the ABS Module active on the bus.

Is the ABS Module active on the bus?

Yes

Go To 4

No

For No Response diagnostic procedures, (Refer to 29 - Non-DTC Diagnostics/Communication - Diagnosis and Testing) .

Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Totally Integrated Power (TIPM) - Standard Procedure).

4. ACTIVE DTCS IN THE FCM (TIPM)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. With the scan tool, select ECU View and select FCM (TIPM).

2. With the scan tool, read active DTCs.

Is the U0001-NO COMMUNICATION ON THE CAN C BUS CIRCUIT ACTIVE in the FCM at this time?

Yes

Replace the ABS Module per Service Information.

Perform the ABS VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Antilock Brake (ABS) - Standard Procedure).

No

Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per Service Information.

Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Engine Control (ECM) - Standard Procedure).

Thanks for the info. Sadly I lack the equipment to do that sort of scan. I just have an OBD reader.

The good news is that I no longer have the U1412 code present.

Thanks again for the explanation.
