Hawaii diesel?

FAST, cheap, and easy!

A resentful swipe at Big Oil.

I just found out that I'm getting transferred to Hawaii which means selling our toyhauler which is the main reason we bought the truck. I heard fuel prices in general are high in Hawaii, but I'm wondering what diesel prices are like. I can't remember ever seeing somebody's signature on here that has Hawaii listed as their home...

I know there's someone from HI here, I just can't remember his name.

I hope to one day have a retirement home in Hawaii. If fuel prices are high it'll be a good excuse to take a few years tearing my truck down and restoring it (it'll be at least 30 years old by then).

and bio diesel is BIG in hawaii too.

I saw a few CTD's on maui

and fox just got back from a month on the beach too Oo.

Hawaii Diesel

Here in Hawaii fuel is sold by the gallon not liter. Diesel sells for $2. 93 to $3. 40 per gallon here on Kauai. We are a little higher than Oahu. I personally don’t pay much attention to the price of fuel because if you want to drive you pay the price or drive a rice burner.

I visited the Big Island in Nov. 04 and Dodge CTD's were everywhere as there are many huge ranches there. Diesel at that time was running $3. 00. Powerstrokes were #2 and Chevys' almost nonexistant.

Ya, we got lucky a few years back and took a risk and bought a condo. I knew the price was good if we needed to sell it quick.

Well, it worked out great! We really should sell out in Illinois and go stay.

The pain to come back here is just about too much for me. My wife is slower to make a jump like I would.

Anyway, back to the topic, I only saw one gas Dodge!!

My wife was laughing at me when a Cummins would come down a street!!! She said I was like a hound dog, could hear it 5 blocks back!

They are big on bio-diesel. I was told I could get a tour of the plant but never did. The back-up generator at our condo had some bad bio a few years ago and now the management won't trust it. I don't like bio to sit for long times. This generator runs for 15 minutes once a month, more if needed, as a standard test. Anyway it had to have the fuel system rebuilt.

on maui down by the aquarium there is a coast guard station and one of the guards drove a cummins when we were there last year.

Nat'l Diesel/gas prices -

Go to www.aaanewsroom.net -

Updated daily - except on weekends.

Will give you nat'l averages and state by state. Look to left side of

page & click the fuel gauge. Shows (for 12-17) 3. 32 for Diesel and

2. 65 for reg gas in Hawaii.

Like anywhere else, some stations may be a bit higher or lower.

The diesel "sold by the litre" must be the Hawaiian Islands

in Mexico and Canada! [Haoles!]

Bob, the only truck there this time was a std cab chevy d-max! I never saw it moved the entire time we were there, not even with a tow truck!!

10-9, those prices must be for the island of Oahu- honalulu- as Maui is always higher.

Regular gas was 2. 83 and higher this trip.

BTW, that chevy just doesn't look good. Kinda like a 'wanna be' truck.

Appreciate all the input guys. It doesn't sound like it will be a bad gig. My wife is looking forward to it and I'm starting to.

Anything special I have to do with running bio-diesel?

Fox,

what is the housing market like there on Oahu? We are considering buying a house there but only if the market is somewhat stable and not on the verge of collapse, otherwise we'll put our money somewhere else.

the bio will clean the fuel system , the higher% the more that go's to the filter, its not uncomin with 20-30% and more to plug fiters , maybe 1-3 times before its cleaned out , and on the older trucks about 93 and older theres problums with the methonal distroying the rubber hoses and seals , but the newer about 94 and up have non rubber hoses and seals so those aren't a problum . It would seem that if your going to have a truck there , it would be cheeper to ship it than to replace it , a new truck loses 20% as soon as it leaves the lot , new truck 30-40 grand = 6,000-8,000 , that should cover the cost of shipping.

I was on Oahu for about a week last summer and I only saw a couple stations that even had diesel. I did see a few CTDs around though. If you're in the military, I didn't see any base gas stations that had diesel so you'll probably be paying the off-base price (not that there's that much of a difference).

I lived in Hawaii for many years as a kid in the 50's and as a Marine stationed there in the late 80's and early 90's. If I were you, I would put your rig in covered storage with a family member or someone you trust and get your self an island car. Then when you get back, bring your beloved, CLASSIC LOW MILEAGE BABY, out of storage and enjoy it and watch people say WOW nice rig;)

Things rust real bad over there unless you install an electronic rust buster ;)

When did they start selling by the gallon? I admit it's been a while since I left ('88) and every station used liters to make the prices look good. It was a PITA changing the meter heads on the pumps from Gallons to Liters. At least it's nice to know Hawaii finally joined the rest of the USA. :-laf

Not really any special things to do to run bio, but I wouldn't let it sit in a tank for more than 3 months, as it can go bad.

I don't know the housing market on Oahu, but I'd contact a few banks and find a forclosing or repo to get a good deal. But, check the neighborhood real good.

I first went to the islands in 92 and everything was sold by the gallon.

I don't want to get rid of the truck, it's been the best one I've owned and even though I've had it a couple of years now, I still love driving it. I'm in the Coast Guard and they pay to ship 2 cars over there, so that's not the concern, I do worry about it getting rusted up while I'm there though. Right now I live in Corpus Christi and live on Padre Island which is the first place I have ever seen plastic rust, it's more humid than Hawaii and living on the island we get alot of salt spray and the truck has done well here since I keep it in the garage and wash it regularly.

Fox, the only reason I asked you about the real estate market is because you had said you had a condo over there and I wasn't sure how well versed you were in the market. We don't have a lot of time to look around for a house unfortunately but we should have a pretty good idea by the time we get there.

Thanks,

Pat
