My friend called me up last night and wanted to know the head bolt torque specs for his 93 CTD. He's got a small coolant weep on the back of the head on the exhaust side and it hoping a re-torque of the bolts will seal it.

The info I have is from a 2001 FSM and it says:

Torque bolts to 80 N·m (59 ft. lbs. )

Torque bolts to 105 N·m (77 ft. lbs. )

Tighten all bolts an additional ¼ turn (90°)

It shows a diagram with the order as well, looks like there are 26 head bolts.

Is this info correct for the older engines as well?

A re-torque probably will not fix it. There are a lot of 1st. Gens running around with the same problem, mine included. Have decided not to mess with it till it gets bad, mine loses 1 quart every 2 months not enough for me to mess with.

Here is the torque spec. for the 92 head from the FSM:

Step 1. Tighten all bolts in sequence to 66 ft. lbs. recheck all bolts & tighten any that are not 66 ft. lbs.

Step 2. Tighten all 12mm bolts to 89 ft. lbs. recheck all 12mm bolts & tighten any that are not 89 ft. lbs.

Step 3. Tighten all bolts in sequence an additional 90 degrees.

In the back of the book it list "long bolts" under step#2.

General rule of thumb for retorques is 120-125ft-lbs. Pick a number and do them all to that spec.

I agree- a retorque normally wont help things. BTDT. I had to get new bolts, as about 3 of them wouldnt hold 125ft-lbs. I figured if they were bad, the others probably werent real great.

Yeah, understood that retorque may not help.

The truck is just a beater with like 300,000 miles, so it's a cheap try at least. He'll replace the head gasket when the motor comes out to put it in the Chevy 6pack he's got (bought the Dodge for that reason)
