Any body know if there is a differance in the Exhaust and Intake Runners (port) on a 89 and 94 head I have a extra 89 head hand would like to do some port work and try it out on a flow bench and then do the 94 head so I could see what works the best on the old head before I do the one for the drag truck thanks George

2 main differences. 1. early head won't have cut out to clear P7100 overflow valve, and may not have 1/8 npt hole for boost takeoff to afc in the position used by p7100. 2. there are high and low swirl heads. If you give me engine serial #s for the extra head and for the 94 I can tell you if they are the same swirl.

The casting number on the 94 head is the standard one used in all 12 valve Rams, including 215 hp. That engine was built 1/31/94. The 1989 engine was built 1/9/89 and is a different part number, probably the casting number is different too. Typically these early (first gen Ram) heads did not have the notch on the driver's side near the front for clearance to the P7100 overflow valve. Also being an 89 head, it would have the larger 9mm (. 35") holes for the injector nozzles instead of the later 7 mm (. 28"). The early heads tended to crack even more than the late ones from the intake valve seat to the injector hole.

The Cummins catalog shows the 94 as low swirl but doesn't include that info on the 89 head.
