I am stuck in Bend, Oregon. I was about 20 miles east of Bend on hwy 20, pulling a grade with a 5000 lb u haul trailer. About 3/4 the way up I felt a weird shudder. looked at gauges and egt= +1400, Boost= +25, water= ~230. Pulled over Fast. I was in 5th gear, 2000 rpm. Let it run for about 15 seconds, tried to get some heat off, buy then the smoke was starting to roll. I think all of it came from breather. :confused: but I could not tell. I had to shut down. Sat there for a minute and popped hood. WAY HOT. bad smells all around. no visible signs of cracks or water on ground. however the reservoir was plum full. I called middle number for bend oregon in travel comp, and he gave me a shop name. I had the truck towed to Bratains(think thats right) truck shop. where it sits now. its 7:45pm local Bend time wednesday. Truck will be worked on in the morning starting at 7:30 am thursday. I need info, what do you all think, is this shop good, prices, ect. I would like some opinions. what other damage could there be :{ ? I really would appreciate it. Thanks a bunch.
 
Could not really tell, It was full though. I pulled dipstick, oil was a little high, but I could not really tell,it was not foamy and white. The past week I did notice lag, heavy smoke, little low power. I need new injectors and DV's though. and my fuel eco was a little low. thanks for getting back so fast. PS with engine off I heard poping and cracking on the exhaust side of engine. but very muffled.

most likely boiling yes. nothing over 190 recently, until the breakdown and then it was off the guage, but I have noticed the fan alot more. heavy white, maybe light blue, but it did smell like Rotella a little.

the smoke may have just been oil due to worn rings.

what was the oil like shortly before?

i am just wondering because maybe you cracked the block internally or the head.

did you start the truck after that?
 
oh, dont say that... . hmmm. Oil was a little black, but no biggy, changed oil at 150,000. No the tuck has not been started since. I did notice that some water did get pulled back in from the reservour, maybe a quarter of the tank. oil after the deal, was good in color, slightly brown and smelled good.
 
sorry didnt mean to scare you but maybe it is as simple like a bad t stat or water pump.



your radiator cap should have realesed some pressure.
 
oh, not scared just being funny. it is defenatly more serious than that. what are some symptoms of a bad but not dead HG
 
also, I really need some feed back on the shop, I hope they are good. I would do this myself but i am between my shops now. this sucks.
 
i have never heard of them but i have also never been to that state.

ussually the symptom would be water in oil or vise versa and it would smoke white like a motha and run real irraticaly.

plus i dont think you would have had that much coolant in the recovery tank and if so it would have been an oil/water milkshake.
 
well I had the mother load of white smoke, and running irratically. I think it may have been a little oily, i shut the thing down really quickly. I wonder if i just caught it quick enough. :confused:
 
not shure but your egts were pretty high and probably climbing.

maybe that is what would have caused a bad piston or melted valves but i guess just see what they say in the morning then go to the shop and check your coolant and oil after the motor has cooled down all night and see what it looks like.

hopefully it is something not that bad.

Problem found.

Ok. Went to shop this morning. Started truck up, missed BIG time. lots of blow by. Problem= water pump went out the same time the temp gauge went and the engine went nuclear, also bad injectors contributed to the problem. 1 if not more of the pistons stuck. Going to do a full engine overhaul at the grand total of ~$4000. 00 parts and labor. Thanks for the help and ideas. TDR rules. good for another million miles after I get done with it. Oo.
