While driving a few nights ago, I pulled out the head light switch to engage the fog lamps - loud noise from under the hood and fog lamps would not come on. Tried a few more times, still no luck. I had the truck in the shop since yesterday to have the Yukon free spin kit installed, I asked the mechanic to look into why I cannot turn on the fog lamps. Well he called back with some really strange news- they where looking into why the fog lamps wouldn't function. They told me the key was in the ignition and when they went to pull on the light switch to engage the fog lamps the starter spun (as if the truck was trying to start!!!). This guy says he's never seen something like this !!! He checked for codes- there where none, he said he could keep "digging " and try to figure out what the heck is going on ! I told to hold off due to the fact I need to bring the truck back to the dealer for the H62 recall completed. Have any of you guys heard of something like this? Ant thoughts would be appreciated. By the why the mechanic really liked the Yukon Free spin kit, "well made". Thanks, Frank

I just pulled three different codes P0234 -Turbocharger overboost condition, P0602 Control Module Programming Error/not programming, and P0483- cooling Fan Speed. Does anyone think that the P0602 HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE light switch acting up???

The cooling fan is shorted and pulling down the bus. DONT underestimate this fault - it screws up all kinds of things!
Unplug the fan and I suspect the other codes will clear within 10 starts. Replace the clutch fan with a Mopar part only.

Thanks, Prairie Dog, I'll see if my local dealer has it in stock, if not I'll order it through Geno's. Also, is there a special wrench you need to remove the clutch? I'll do a search on "clutch fan" replacement and see what I find. You guys are great!

Scott, thanks. We don't have a Orielly's around here , I''ll try both NAPA or Auto Zone. The fan clutch is on national back order, and my local dealer had no idea when they would be getting them in! Typed in the fan # on goggle and found a dealer down in Dallas Texas (Freedom Chrysler) that had one in stock - $341.00 including shipping to my door. Side note, went to start the truck this morning, big drain on the batteries, got her started. I'am going to disconnect the fan and hopefully everything goes back to normal.

Sounds like a ground has been lost somewhere under the hood..................................I'm guessing a tipm has popped?

That's what I'm wondering. TIPM's don't survive well under normal everyday circumstances so a dead short in a fan clutch could end one easily, I would think.

My '08 Town and Country just ate it's TIPM for no good reason other than it felt like it.

Mike.

The 03's don't have a TIPM, just an FCM. The fan is all driven directly from the ECU for sensors and power so it doesn't even get run out of the BCM. As a guess, there is a wire in the headlight loom that is shorted to the starter relay somewhere. I don't think the starter relay engagment is run thru the BCM but it is a possibility there is corrosion in there that is shorting something.

Found out another electrical issue tonight - I have no high beam on passenger side of truck. I had replaced both bulbs (Sylvania Silver Star 55 Watt) about two weeks ago, everything was working fine until now???

Cerb, thanks for the correction. I have a hard time with the 03-05 trucks on those details.

Frank, does this truck have a plow??? If so I am wondering if the add-on harness for the snowplow headlight kit could be involved.

I know that the Fisher plows have a module that controls the headlight function, in the old days there was a switch to change the headlights from the truck to the plow headgear lighting. Nowadays the module takes care of that when the harness is unplugged while removing the plow.

Mike, all my trucks have Boss plows on them, except for the 92' (Myers). This particular truck also has a tailgate salter. Both the plow and the salter have been installed since November 2003. No problems until now! The Boss plows also have modules under the hood for head light function. Once you install the plow, you have a switch in the cab to toggle between "truck lights or plow lights". I believe over the past 10.5 years salt has made it's way into some electrical connections, question is where? I'am going to start by checking the engine grounds and any other ground I see and "clean them up". I should get the new fan clutch early next week, I'll install it. Disconnect both batteries for an hour or so, reconnect everything and see it still throws codes. If so, off to the dealership (which I dread to do!!!).

Quick question- they are forecasting 4-6" of snow for tomorrow (Jersey), should I unplug the fan clutch? Or run the truck w/ it plugged in? Don't want to do any further damage to the ECM or any other electrical components. Cleaned up the grounds on truck, disconnected batteries for an hour. Checked codes no longer getting P0620, still getting p0483,P0234 and now P0480 (cooling fan 1 control circuit/open (low speed fan Relay). Really need this truck for this up coming storm! Thanks, Frank

I don't think I would want to be plowing without a fan especially on an auto trans truck. My experience from working on plow trucks for others is that plowing creates a lot of heat on the trans especially, regardless of how cold ambient air temp is. Although if you have an open circuit fault active will the fan come on anyways? If it is an open circuit fault code I would not think that would cause ECM damage.

The codes indicate either the clutch is bad or the ECU circuit is bad or compromised, doubtful it will hurt it any more than it is. Plowing without the fan is going self defeating if it is non functional. You might try hot wiring the clutch and see if it will engage. Might be conections or ECU circuit that is bad.

Finally got truck back from dealer today. All codes where cleared, fan clutch works fine. What they found was one of the fog lamps wiring had rubbed against the truck frame and grounded out back to starter. They repaired the wiring and replaced the starter for a grand total of $2,371.68 !!!!!!! The original price was for $2,797.10 !!! When the service manager had called and left a message earlier today stating the truck was repaired and the total cost was $2,797.10 of which $1010.00 was for the starter alone!!! , I nearly fell off my chair! I phoned both NAPA and Auto Zone to inquire what a new starter would cost me, Auto Zone $158.00 (w/ limited life time warranty) and NAPA $ 174.00. I then called and ask to speak to the service manager and expressed to him my concerns about a $1010.00 starter! He said he would check with his parts department to see if he could save me some money on the starter. He called about two hours later and "was able " to take $425.42 off the total invoice for a new grand total of $2371.68. Wrote a check and got my truck out of there for good!!! Talk about being raked over the coals!!!
