I've amassed many BOMBs (see sig), but have been hesitant to install my twins without first beefing up the transmission and head. Just completed DTT transmission overhaul (James Northum, Midlothian, 972-467-3702 - top notch work with many recommendations) and am now looking for someone just as competent (preferably in the DFW metroplex) to deck, o-ring, and stud my head. Referrals?

What? Is o-ringing the head so uncommon that no one on this site from the DFW area has done it?

Or, does one have to pull the head himself and then send it off to one of the big outfits? I guess that I'd have to palletize it and send it as freight? Surely would be better to just drop the truck off somewhere fairly local.

But I want some references rather than me just picking someone out of the yellow pages.

The twins should push me well over 500HP, so I know that I need to get this done first. Anyone got a recommendation?

OK guys, am I "out in left field" here? If I turn up the boost (75-80 psi) to take full advantage of the twins, don't I need o-rings / fire-rings in order to keep from blowing the headgasket?

I'd prefer fire-rings, but I REALLY do not want to pull the engine to cut the block - so, I guess I'm going with o-rings. Is it possible to fire-ring without pulling the motor?

I'd prefer the extra grip of 14mm studs, but I'm concerned about retapping the block - won't this weaken it?

Which is better: copper gasket, marine gasket, or 3rd gen "special" gasket? Does copper gasket require 14mm studs in order to get enough grip? Do the 3rd gen gaskets work on 2nd gen, or do they leak?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

you can do fire rings in the head they are just preferred to go in the block. I have had my head fire ringed for over 38K with PDR's twins with and no problems.

Schieds did my head work, i took it off and drove it to them. the wieght of these things is incredible. you'd be better off to have it done locally, hopefully someone will recommend a shop. Or you could call Piers and get one of his ported heads with the Orings for exchange. also isnt F1 diesel (Don M) down that way?
