A freind of mine is changing valve springs in a 12 and broke a head bolt. I found in tdr that thay should be 125. Is that too high?

There are suppose to be 3 different sizes of Head bolts. The max torque is 89 ftlbs + 90 degree turn (this is for the 12mm bolts). This is from my '97 shop manual

Semerson:

I'm not in So Cal and you'd likely like it back together. . they are inexpensive less than 15 ea. if Cummins/Cal-Pac. ? Is open tomorrow. . the long ones on the rocker towers are part num. . 3920781

89 ft lb + 90 deg. = 105-110 in final torq. I'd use the 120 as a max. 110-115 s/b plenty. A few drops of oil on the threads and where the head of the bolt (flange) seats to the rocker tower is also a good idea.

Whew just when he was worried about dropping a valve, then ole Mr. Murphy reared his head! Since he's in CA, how much to keep him there? :)

Good luck

Andy

The stock bolts should be trashed. Studs can be reused but the stockers are just barely able to take one outing, they are cheap to replace from cummins. Studs are way better and don't need to be replaced but are way more money. I have a set of the Hasley's studs from Piers unsed once that I can part with.
