Headlight Bulb Blew Up

Anyone ever have this happen?

While driving last night, I heard a loud POP, and noticed that my drivers side head light went out. When I looked at it later, you could see pieces of glass laying in the bottom of the headlight assembly. I'll pick up a new bulb today.

I've had lights burn out in the past but never expolde!

What's the deal with this???????

I've heard of it. It may have had some oil from someone's fingers on the bulb. The packaging says do not touch the bulb with your fingers, use tissue paper to handle it. It must make them heat unevenly or something.

I had that happen a few years ago. It made a mess. The whole inside of the lens was covered in a fine white powered. I had to remove the lens assembly and clean it out.

Make sure the bulb is totally clean of ANY finger prints or residue. The bulbs get so hot that the glass structure heating is uneven and will stress it.

A small crack in your lense & then even a tiny bit of moisture directly contacting the very, very hot bulb would produce that effect. Check the housing for chips or cracks as well to prevent it from occuring again.

Ditto on what CyberRanger said. Our Mustang used to eat the fog lamp bulbs. When the seal wore out it would allow moisture to get inside. When the cold water hit the hot bulb it would blow to pieces. I had a similar occurence with my 01. The seal wore out and I actually had about 1/2" of water in the headlight. I had to take a small drill bit and drill a hole on the bottom of the headlight to let the water drain out. Never had an issue after that.

That's something that I'll definitely have to check into. Right now I have another post going to ask if there's any tricks regarding removing the headlihjt assembly so I can clean it out and now also ckeck for a water leak.

Anyone have any instructions?
