Allright fellas. I have just went through my second headlight switch. So I went to Auto Zone today, got a new switch and a 30 amp fog light relay. Got everything working after about 8 hours of trial and error. I was sure I had found the right combination of wires to use for the relay. Tucked everything back away behind the dash, and then I realized that the wire I used for a signal lead is for the dash lights. They will no longer dim. Just off and on. So I am sure I do not have the correct load bareing wire on the output side of the relay. So I guess I spent all day just kinda peeing in the wind. I thought I read on here in the archives that you were supposed to use the tanish colored wire. So I did that, cut it into. Put spades on both ends and put one on the signal and one on the output. The relay and everything works fine and I know I have the ground and hot wire correct. I am just not too sure about the proper signal wire and then which wire to put on the load side. I have looked everywhere in the archives, but cannot find where it is explained on how to hook it up. I shudder at the idea of having to take everything back apart again, but I guess I am going to have to.

Can someone please help?

Bill

Come on guys. 41 people have read this and no one has a answer? If you read through the archives everyone's advice says to put in a relay, so I know someone knows what wires to use.

I need to get this done in a bad way. Trailer towing season is almost here and for the next 6 months it will have some sort of a trailer hooked to it at least 5 days a week.

You can use terminals B2 and R for hooking up the relay. they are parallel to each other in the middle of the switch connector. If your insulator is melted, I use the recall package for the 94-97 trucks. P/n CAJM8190. Recall #819. It has switch, relay, and wiring. Recall paperwork has wiring schematic.

Well, I'll give you my $. 02 but I'm not sure how much it'll help you.

When I burned out the switch on my '92, I half-heartedly tried to wire in relays myself, but didn't get too far before I lost my motivation. I ended up getting this:

(I got #30815)

It may seem like the lazy way out of it, but it's very well built, and uses 12 and 14 gauge wire for everything.

Good luck,

Mike

Which one is which? Is B2 the signal wire and R the load wire or vice versa?

Thanks, Bill

In the discontinued parts section of the first gen, i covered this to some length. I used the signal from the low beam wire for the low beam relay, and the signal wire from the high beam for the high beam relay. Also there is a relay back at my trailer plug with a signal from the tail lights to run the marker lights on the trailer. If you need more help, you can e-mail me. Tim

Bill I will crall under my truck when I get home and find out what color I used. I did not do it under the dash I did it under the hood. An easy way out is to go back to the trailer plug and get the tail light wire from it. Extend it up to under the hood, use it for the signal, ground the other signal post, run the n/o output back to the plug, hook the commin(how do you spell that) to the battery. n/o means normaly open do not use n/c (normaly closed leave that post go or the lights will be on all the time and go off when you turn the lights on. Using that methohod only the trailor lights will be on the relay. If you want the truck and tail lights on the relay than I will find out to night what wire I used.

Thanks guys. I was just trying to put it directly off the switch to run all the lights. I have a new switch and everything under there is in good shape now. If I cannot find out which wires to use coming directly off the switch, I will just go to the back and mount it directly off my running light wire to my trailer plug. That will be easy enough. I already have a constant hot ran in there so it will be quite easy to hook up. I guess that will make it good enough anyways, the switch should be able to handle the factory lights on my dually.

Thanks again, Bill
