Just wondering how many 1st gen owners have replaced your headlight switchs? I'm on my 9th one as of now. I think I will put my running lights on a seperate circit of its on and run a toggle switch for on & off operation. Most guys who Stay hooked up to a trailer have experenced this problem. TIA, Mike

Everyone I know adds a toggle switch for running lights on their one-ton trucks. The switches just aren't designed to handle all of that extra load. Add a trailer, and it's whamo!

mike,
I installed a headlight brightener relay kit
from JACOBS electronics, it takes all the laoad off of the headlight switch and puts straight alternator voltage to the headlights, my lights are so bright now i can't even seee 100 watt perlux lights when i turn them on..... and no more switch problems . . Rick

FYI,
I saw a relay kit for trailer lights that just uses the lights on the truck to run a relay system to operate the trailer lights from direct battery power. I think they even had it on the ShadeTree show... . That would ease alot of electrical overloads. .

I just finished installing a relay to unload the switch. Radio Shack sells a 30 amp automotive relay, a circuit breaker and a small plastic box for about $5 each.

Drill a hole in the box to run the leads in & out, mount it with the hole down somewhere near the plug.

Take the running-light lead off the plug, put it to one end of the relay coil. Run a lead to ground off the other end of the coil, so the headlight switch energizes the coil and switches the load.

Run a lead off the battery thru a 30-amp auto-resetting circuit breaker to the switched contact on the relay, and run a lead for the relay output to the running-light contact on the plug.

Good Saturday-morning project.

Guys, thanks for the great advice. Sorry it took so long to reply. just placed an order yesterday for a FL-70 to add to the fleet 60" sleeper & the works cheaper than a new Dodge. But will still run the 92 as well. Once again, Thanks,Mike

That little Freightliner is cheaper than a new Dodge/Cummins, How? I guess that those new Dodges that I've seen with the H. O. Cummins, 6sp, 4x4, cost a pretty penny!

Chris, You gotta think about it. This includes a 60" standup sleeper, air brakes, ac, 335 hp motor, etc out the door price. $ 41,000. 00 Cash price. I'm a die hard Dodge/Cummins kinda guy. But due to DOT regs I have to make added upgrades to the Dodge to make road ready & legal in DOT standards. You figure a New 35,000. 00 Dodge and another 2,500. 00 in a sleeper, plus gooseneck/5th wheel setup your looking at the same price. All this W/O the air brake set up. Which DOT IS changing the laws regarding hotshots in the future. I was NOT knocking the Dodge/Cummins I love my 92 but refuse to spend over 40,000. 00 on a pick up when a FL-70 gets the job done quicker, cheaper, more hP, and a better nationwide warranty. Mike

Just replaced my switch yesterday.
Tail lights and marker lights out but headlights on. I checked the wiring diagram and there are 22 (22!) bulbs on that circuit for a D/W 350 dually with the LE bumper (the step bumper has two license plate lamps instead of one for the standard bumper). On a D/W 250 LE w/o clearance lights that number is reduced to 8. The same guage wire (18 guage-sort of small) is used for both applications. There definitely is no allowance for additional load on the D/W 350.

mark93 Your right the 350's are drawing a lot more current through the light switch because of all the extra clearance lights. After my second light switch burned up it also melted the light switch socket. The dealer has a light switch socket pigtail. The wiring is cut behind the old socket and the new socket is solder to the original wiring. This is the perfect time to add a relay to the clearance light circuit. It's been about a year since I did mine, so far no more burned switch. If nothing is done to reduce the current through the switch it's just a matter of time until it over heats again.
