Is there anyway to shut headlights off while starting? I was at "no crank" (low voltage, 11 volts) because of being in storage.
If the headlights & all the other lights would not come on along with the grid heaters, I believe it would have cranked over.

Don't know if you have it, but move the light switch off auto to off. There are some headlight option settings on my Nav 8.4, but cant remember what options are.

Cheers, Ron

Ron,

That's a good idea but I don't think that's the problem. My 2016 also leaves the headlights (and taillights) on during the start sequence. I never leave my light switch in AUTO. It's always OFF when I am starting the engine.

I'm going to check for options on my Nav 8.4. Thanks for that suggestion.

Usually the headlights go off while cranking.
But at 11.0 Volt we all know that the electronics go nuts and doin all funny thing with the truck.

And sure with 11 Volt the truck wont start anyways, with or without headlights on.

If the headlamps are drawing 15 amps, in the big picture it does not make a difference when the starter is pulling 150-200 and the grid heaters are pulling 100. It's not enough to make a difference.

Just checked my EVIC and does not have option to not have lights on while starting. It does have number of minutes for lights on upon approach. I keep my lights on auto except when I want to run with them on towing or on cloudy days. I keep truck in 60' x 60' shop and like auto on when pulling in. Although having lights on while actually starting is counter intuitive to me, I don't have a problem with it so far.

It was a bad battery. Almost 4 yrs old to the date. Replaced both.
I'd still like to find a way to shut off all lights while starting.

Stab,
I honestly don't understand the logic of having the lights on while cranking. Oh well, another mystery to throw on the pile.

I found out how to turn the headlights off while the engine is cranking if you have the 8.4AN radio.

At the screen, select:
  • Controls
  • Settings
  • Lights
  • Headlight Illumination on Approach
  • Press the "-" (minus) key as many times as needed to set the time to zero.
The headlights will no longer come on when you unlock the truck, nor will they be illuminated while the engine cranks.

If you want headlights to come on when you unlock the truck you probably have to accept headlights on during engine starting.

Thanks for pulling this out. I had found it too, but like the lights on at approach feature, but didn't know it also killed the lights while cranking.

Good info to know. Ron

Ron,
I may have not phrased that correctly. If you have your "Headlight Illumination on Approach" set to anything except zero then the headlights will stay on while you start the truck.

Actually, after saying that I realized that if they are set for 30 seconds and you wait the 30 seconds for the lights to go out on their own before you start the truck they probably don't turn on again when you start the engine. I haven't checked that.
