I plan to install my cab lights tomarrow. I've been procrastinating for a month now because I didn't want to mess with the headliner. Any tips, tricks, or advise on the headliner? Next time I'll just buy the 3500 SRW like I should have. :(

Well the deed is done. With no responses in 60+ views I decided to go for it. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The whole install took just over three hours. It sure hurt drilling all those holes in the roof. :{

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier.

I found a reasonably priced upholstery shop where I live, and have been trading there for several years -- repairs, replacing part of the seat covers in one vehicle, headliner in another, etc.

When I had them do the headliner, after they got it out I brought the vehicle (my 81 Chev 1-ton CC DRW GAS) home and ran some all the wires for four interior dome lts -- White/Red/Off. Then took the vehicle back and they installed the new headliner. Total cost was around $160. 00.

In another vehicle I wanted to add an antenna, and had the shop loosen and drop the portion of the headliner I needed to work inside, then when I was done took the vehicle back down to the shop and they put the headliner back in place. I think it cost me around $40. 00.

I've done the same thing with doors -- needed to replace a window mechanism, so I had the shop remove the door panel, and then replace it. Cost was around $30. Also spilled hot liquid wax on one of the seats in a passenger car, so I took the seat out and took it down to the shop. They removed the cover which I then took to a rug cleaner who said they could get the wax out, which they did. Then took the clean cover back to the upholstery shop, and they reinstalled the cover. I then reinstalled the seat in the car. Cost at the upholstery shop was about $20. 00.

I can do alot of things, but upholstery isn't one of them, so I'd rather pay the shop to do what they do best, and I install, fix or replace the other stuff.

The reason I didn't reply is because I'm not sure how to do it either. I've been wanting to install an external GPS antennae. The way I want to do it will require dropping the rear part of the headliner. At a quick glance, it doesn't look too bad. Did you run into anything unexpected? Thanks!

Nothing unexpected really. The center console is just clipped in and pops loose. The visors have three screws apiece. The pillars have the two bolts by the grab handles (front and back seats). Most of it was pretty straight forward. The wierdest thing was the little clips that the visors clip into. The back half of them (half closes to the windshield) slides down about 3/4 inch to release them from the roof. It took a while to figure that out. I only dropped the front half to do the job but I imagine the back wouldn't be any more difficult.

I put in the sirius ant. The headliner was easy,The part I screwed up was after drilling hole in roof I left some shavings on the roof and they rusted and stuck to roof.

Task125:

Where did you mount your antennae? The spot I'm inclined to is in front of the tail light on the cab. I'm thinking I can remove the light fixture to give me better access for the cable, etc. I'm planning on using this antennae with a Garmin hand-held GPS. I haven't really even found an antennae I like yet.

Danny

I went with the sirius kit from mopar. it has a templet that you use the screws from the 3rd brake light and drape it over the roof and there is an x where you drill. about a foot in from light.

Danny,

I used the Garmin windshield mount antenna (suction cups) mounted low on the windshield and just tucked the cable behind and along the front of the dash for my SPIII and it works very well.

Dean,

I had just taken a quick glance at the suction cup mount and didn't think much of the idea, but that sure does sound easy. Plus, I have this queezy feeling about drilling holes in my roof. I think I'll go to the sporting goods store and look at it again. Thanks for the info.

My console has 2 screws under the lites that I had to remove.

When I put the XM ant on the roof I just brought the cable thru the CHML and tucked it in the headliner and run under the molding on the drivers side (C pillar and door entry). I did put a piece of foam on the roof side for the cable to seal against and no leaks yet (knock on woo-head).

Try http://www.thegpsstore.net/about_us.asp, should be able to get it for about $70 and they ship out UPS the same day. I have used that type mount from Garmin for years and it works very well for me.

Those who have removed the headliner, do you have any pics of the roof with the headliner out? I have some questions about the structure under there.

Has anyone had a new headliner installed lately? If so, what was the cost?

Mine's really looking shabby and needs replaced soon.
