i have changed the oil 35 times and always torque the plug to 30 ft. lbs. today after i torqued it i noticed a leak . first i thought it was the gasket . so i got a clean container and drained the oil. when i removed the plug it broke where the flange with the 3/8 drive attaches to the threaded part. fortunately i had a new one. if this happened and one was far from cummins or they didnt have one, could be a big problem . have a good look at the plug next time you change oil . hope it helps someone.

4barR,

I had the same problem. I bought this nifty little drain plug from Geno's and now I never wrench on it to change oil. It has an attachment that you screw into it connected to a 6" hose that pushes a spring loaded plunger up inside the hole releasing the oil out of the hose.

It also has a cap with an o-ring that you use to cover it while driving around. It is one of the best small investments I have ever made. The whole thing is made out of solid brass and is very tough.

I highly receommend it!!

Thanks

Phil

the replacement plug came from cummins. i have looked at the quick drains. the ones ive seem dont seem to be very well made. i have installed a lot of these on aircraft over the years. have had a few leak. depending on how far they protrude below the pan , could be hit . i will have another look for one of better quality.

The one from Genos only protrudes a tiny bit from the pan and is very well made. All high quality brass. Very solid. I have no leaks. I have no affiliation with Geno's. Just love the product.

when I first got my truck the allen hole on the drain plug was pretty whooped... the 2nd time I changed the oil on it, the hole stripped out. I welded a big flanged nut onto the plug so now I just use an 18mm wrench to remove it. I also double up a wrench on it, and I KNOW I'm torquing it a lot more than 30lbs.

the welding essentially doubled (or more) the thickness of the flange, and it seals great with no gasket. I'm on my 5th oil change since then I believe.
