From the Hospital I Work At, and there isn't any way I would ever make the BMI recommended, not when young, not now :{

Body mass index (BMI) — Today, almost 65 percent of U. S. adults are overweight or obese. A BMI of 18 to 24 is considered average. To calculate your BMI

Multiply your weight in pounds by 703.

Divide that answer by your height in inches.

Divide that answer by your height in inches again.

For example, a woman who weighs 270 pounds and is 68 inches tall has a BMI of 41. 0.

Blood pressure — Nearly one in three U. S. adults has high blood pressure. Normal blood pressure varies with individuals. While 120/80 used to be the gold standard, new information suggests lower is better. A pressure of 140/90 indicates the beginning of hypertension.

Cholesterol — The body generates all the cholesterol it needs, so when your diet adds to that cholesterol level, the excess builds up and begins to clog arteries. Bad cholesterol, LDL, should optimally be below 100 mg/dl; borderline high is 130-160 mg/dl; and high is above 160 mg/dl. Good cholesterol, HDL, carries the excess cholesterol to the liver for disposal. HDL levels should be over 40.

Heart rate — Heart rates differ by individuals, age, and activity. Newborns have very high heart rates, 100 to 160 beats per minute; children from one to 10 years of age, 70 to 120 beats; children over 10 and adults, 60 to 100; and athletes, 40 to 60 beats per minute.

I'm 57 years old, 6' tall and weigh 195 lbs - 10 lbs more than I did my freshman year in college. My BMI, by this calculation, is 26. 4. I'm quite comfortable in my overweight condition... .

I think 18-24 would be considered anorexic. :-laf

By this formula, I'm at a BMI of 25. I figured I was doing pretty good. :(

I'm a 22 BMI at 55 yrs. after losing 30 #'s due to medicine woman noticing increasing glucose and cholesterol levels during my annual. :)

I guess what I don't understand on the BMI calculation is that some individuals are naturally built like Barney Fife and others like Hulk Hogan. The BMI calculations seemingly make no differentiation between the two physiques. A 6' individual can weigh 230 lbs and be obese or (in the case of a weightlifter) heavily muscled. The BMI would be the same for both.

Rusty:

That is why there is such controversy over the BMI, pro-football players (not receivers!!!) and NBA players (Shaq for one said it is balony that he is considered obese) said it is a bunch of hooey! The doctors here seem to be divided also, saying that for some people to meet ideal standards they would be either too skinny (which I understand has it own health risks) or impossible to meet.

But they changed the food pyramid to a new standard :p so I guess it is just the way you define things. :-laf

As an aside, it is amazing to me to see as many health professionals out at the smoking booths, puffing away, as I do, and then get these health alerts?

You see cardioligists, thoracic surgeons and OR staff, etc. at the smoking booth :( so go figure

I guess my being a 20 at age 33 is not so bad, but when I run the numbers with the weight I used to be before acid reflux, I was a BMI of 28 or so. Funny thing is I felt better at my previous weight than I do now at 40 pounds lighter.

Acid Reflux - The bodies way of getting even for all that fun stuff you used to enjoy.

Lessee - 38 years old, 6'5", 241 after losing about 30 pounds - 28. 58 by this setup. I've been working out for 6 months now, and I'm starting to gain weight again - but it's muscle now instead of fat. None of the charts go up to my height, and if I weighed the 190 or so that I'm told I ought to weigh, I'd be anorexic for sure!

6'2" and 275 put me at BMI of 35. 30. I'll admit, I could lose a few. When I was at 220 that would put me at BMI of 28. 24. I was too thin. Ideally, i'd like to be about 230-235lbs.
