My 'heat exchange hose' failed on a recent trip and I lost all my anti-freeze and over heated. Had to be towed to nearest dealer. My question is where is this hose on the engine and what does it do? I could not find it or see it but I was leaking fluid behind and below the engine. Considering carrying a spare, I was 100 miles from civilization...

If the hose part number is 05086942AA, it could be one of the four short 90 degree "L" hoses in the coolant lines running to and from the transmission oil to coolant heat exchanger located at the rear of the engine on the driver's side.

I found the listing in my '03 Ram parts catalog on the page titled "Torque Converter Cooler, 5. 9L diesel, (ETC, ETH)" Figure 5. 9L-420. The title in the '05 Ram parts catalog should read the same; however, the figure number may differ.

Something to think about..... one hose failed, they all have had the same duty cycle. I would consider looking at Mr Bob's Distributing hose set. they are a very high quality silicone hose. They come with a full complement of stainless steel clamps as well. If you price out the OEM replacements and clamps the up grade is very reasonably priced. Silicone hoses usually out last the engines they go on.
I have them on both my CTDs and haven't had a second thought about them. Some of the place I go are so far off the beaten path a breakdown could be my last.

I agree, and where they are located, I would want to do that job only one time and especially not on the side of the road.
