Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) #11 Plate Question

I was on vacation about 3 months ago and the dealer had my truck for a week to fix the steering and the passenger side mirror that wouldnt heat.

Dealer found nothing wrong with the steering, (thats a whole 'nother can of worms I wont open here) and they said the mirror heated up to 125 like it was supposed to.

It doesnt.

My question is, how do I get it apart to test the leads that plug into the mirror?

Or should I just bash it with a hammer?

This summer I want to do the heated/power tow mirror swap, but this winter is when I need them to work. Also I would like to get it fixed to get a little coin back when I try to sell them.

Thanks,

Jim

Do this....

Follow this:

You will need a volt-ohm meter ($10 at WalMart).

Remove the right door panel. Unplug the mirror connector. Bottom two leads on mirror connector (both black, I think), connect ohm meter to both. You should read some continuity. If not, bad heating coils in mirror. Not sure you can replace just the mirror part.

If the mirror checks good, place key in ignition to run position (doesn't matter whether you want to start it or not). Connect the DC volt meter into the mirror plug on the door. Press the heat mirror button on you climate control panel. You should read voltage (up to 12 volts).

One of these tests should give you a clue what's wrong.

Good luck and let us know,

BTW, the reason I'm somewhat versed on this is I just changed my towing mirrors on my 3500 to power/heated ones.

I had the same problem with both of the mirrors on my 01. I thought about pulling the door and then I decided to take it to the dealer to have them check it out under warranty (I actually have a good dealer and service manager). They said the heating element in both the mirrors was bad, so they replaced both of them with new units. I have since seen a TSB saying that if the heater mirror is bad to replace just the mirror not the entire unit. I guess I got luck, that and the service manager is a good guy.

The main reason I took it to the dealer is I did not want to try to get the door pannel off, now that my truck is out of warranty I would go for it. The service manual has a good section on on this. When both of my mirrors went I thought it was going to be the switch on the dash, its part of the AC controls and there is a fuse in the switch. NOT USER replacable according to the manual.

Good luck.
