During the all night snowremoval operations at the beginning of last week, the defrost/heater motor in the dash of the '99 developed a growl. Truck shows 44k on the odo. Is this a bearing giving up the ghost already? Noise was intermittent at first but is constant now. Any hints? Thanks.

The climate control vents and blower are a favored rodent habitat. I once had a pack rat stuff a bunch of underhood insulation in the blower housing, made alot of noise, but not a growl, maybe you got a big one in there that's pi$$ed #ad
. If the blower motor bearings are going out you can get a replacement much cheaper(like $40) from an electric motor supplier, seems I heard DC wants $300 for a replacement. Blower motors won't last as long if they are operated in dust a lot,or maybe you just got a bad one.

Illflem, thanks for the heads up on the rodents. Now that you mention it, something has been chewing up the hood liner over the engine. Stuck my finner in da hole but nuthin' bit so thought the critter was gone. Didn't occur to me that they were establishing residence inside the cab. Hmmm, anyone got a kitty kat handy??
The noise did go away again, but will continue monitoring on a daily basis as the Michigan winter deepens.

thanks

Andy,if the rodents are getting your hood insulation make sure you check your air filter box also. I had the little buggers stuff the airbox full of insulation,I didn't know until the truck lost power that it had happened, good thing they didn't chew through the filter, that would of been a disaster. I have since pop-riveted 1/4" hardware cloth(screen)over the air box opening to keep them out.
