2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Heater core advice. OEM or aftermarket?

Well, I'm dreading the job, but I'm not liking the sweet taste on the way to work every day, so I'm going to have to change the heater core in my '97. What's you opinion on a replacement. Should I buy an OEM one for $136, or put in an aftermarket one? I'm not as concerned with price as I am with longevity... Don't want to do this job again... Thanks in advance.

john i did a napa heater core and napa evaporator last summer and they fit like a glove. Not cheap though i think 140 for heater and 190 for ac evap.

Aftermarket isn't much cheaper than dealer. Dealer likely uses Modine, Valeo or Visteon. . did I miss anyone? Four Seasons also offers one.

Most are made in China anyway. Some parts are boxed then reboxed (modine/air pro etc).



I've never changed one twice (had to warranty core or evap core). So maybe soldering technique metal quality has improved.



Take your time and retro fit all oem shims, spacers/foam blocks etc. to the new unit as to properly support them inside the blower box or you'll "beat" the book your next time in changing it out again.



On 98-02, pay closer attention to the FSM for the elec. controls on some of the actuators, read the horror posts. . think yours was a 97?



I do both at the same time, pulling a dash is no fun even when its for compensation. Its more enjoyable to build a motor etc.

Thanks for the tips. Joe's article in the TDR magazine couldn't have come at a better time for me. Looks like I'll be doing this over the Christmas holidays.
