Here's an old post from Joseph Donnelly regarding heater core replacement,

"See TDR issue 46, p. 12 and Issue 59, p. 90."

I didn't preview the pages, but I think it is what you want.

Biggest headache is pulling the dash! Be prepared for a lot of cussing! Pulled the dash in my '01 1500 to replace evaporator and did heater core while in there. If your dash has any cracks in it, get a replacement top coming from Geno's to go on before dropping back in. If I have to pull again, will put new dash cover in! Good luck with repairs.

You can remove the heater core without removing the dash, that is what the articles are about. I've replaced my dashtop twice. Once with the dash tilted back and once with the whole dash on a pair of sawhorses. Neither way is fast or easy. The heater core, on the other hand, isn't that big of a deal.

The heater core is simple, once you have the dash out. I need to do it again. Uggh. This time, though, the the entire dash assembly has turned into shards and powder.

I was able to locate a decent used dash (minus the top) from a 1994 that had been transplanted into a 1997 at a wrecking yard. The color matched, but I am planning to repaint it anyway as kind of a sealer. I juse need to decide if I am going to do the dash transplant before or after the truck repaint. Probably before, so I run less downside from scratching up the paint. If I scratch up what's left of the paint, no worries.
