It can be done without totally pulling the dash out of the truck, but you still have to pull the dash back. It's not really that difficult, just tedious and time consuming.
 
Drop your steering column and get to pulling bolts. You'll have access in no time. We run Dodge 2nd gens at work and have recently done both heater cores. We can have it swapped now in about two hours.

We also have a 3rd gen that we did the Heater Treater doors on......what a job. The newer truck HVAC boxes are no fun to work on and that's putting it mildly.
 
Issue 46, page 12 has the instructions. You do not have to discharge the A/C as the FSM shows.
 
I did a couple in my truck.
Have all your info gathered before starting the job and it wont be too bad.
It can be done w/o removing the dash from the truck , but you'll need to be somewhat a contortionist to do it.
If youre running an original a/c core, might want to do that while you're in there. jm.02
