Drove this morning to work (about 35 miles) had the truck plugged in over night (temp was 16). I arrived, shut off truck then started it again with in 1 hour, the heating grid came on. Is this correct or do I have a problem. THe engine was still above 140.

Correct.

The sensor for the grid heaters work on ambient air temperature I believe. This means that when the air temperature in the air intake is colder than 50*~, the heaters will be activated, even if the engine water temp is at operating temperature.

Mine (both the '92 and '99) do this when it is first started even if the water temp is 160* and has been not running for only a few minutes.
