A buddy of mine offer me approx. 250 gal of heating oil out of his tank in the basement. (He has converted to nat. gas) Is it safe to use? It's been sitting there about 1-2 years.
I know there's crap in the bottom, but I can test to see how much water is in the tank. What do you guys think?

tmacc,

When you say "safe to use", do you mean in the truck? If so, I would not. Read the posts on fuel prices and the ramifications on using red dyed fuel.

For heating oil, sure. Just filter and don't drain to the last drop.

I'm told it's the same stuff, except it has the sulfur, and it has NO injector cleaner.
It WILL clog your cat, if you have one.
Reason they started the dye was, in the 1980's there was a lot of truck stop owners buying this, and selling it as diesel. Many owners got rich on this. Plus the Govt. don't like it when you dont pay taxes.
If you go to a plumbing supply house (not Home Depot,go where the contractors go)ask for fuel test paste. (I dont know the real name) It's in a small tub. You smear this on a woodn stick, and push it in the tank till it hits bottom. Pull it out and see if it turns green (I think) it'll say what color to look for on the tub.
This will tell you, at least if water is in there.
They do make special additives to remove microbal growth. If it looked like it might have this, I definetly wouldnt use it. MAYBE in the house, depending how bad it looked. If it's real cloudy, it may have growth. The only way to tell is to send it out to be analized.
I've worked places where they had #2 oil sit for 5 years, and it still fired. It was probibally pretty crappy by then, but it worked.

Using to heat house? If it checks out OK.
But what you would have to pay for a new Injector Pump I wouldn't think about using
it in the truck.
Deisel fuel has additives in it, that help keep fuel system and engine at their best.
Check drivers manual, it list recommended fuels for temporary use. The P7100 can digest these fuels and spit them out. Don't know about the electronic injector pump.

I guess I wasn't that clear with my question. Yes, I was asking if it was safe to use in the truck. You guys answered my question. Not safe, particularly with a new lift pump going in next week.
