Just got back from Baja with my new rig. It worked out great, even with all the potholes and the mild 4-wheel driving. Smooth ride, power to spare (even with my SO), and very comfortable camping with my new pop-up camper. The worst problem was keeping the truck right next to the center line; there are NO shoulders on the Mexican highways. The truck ran fine with Mexican diesel.
A friend travelling behind me noticed the rear end of my truck bounced up and down several times after hitting dips. So I am thinking about new shocks. I had Rancho's on my last Ram 1500, and I liked them. I am not inclined to get air springs, even though I had them on my last truck, because the truck is almost level with a 2000 lb. load.
Which part number should I get for fronts/rears with a 3500 SRW, 2200 lb. load max? Any suggestions on what stiffness settings to use loaded and unloaded? Are there any alternatives to Rancho's which would allow me to adjust the stiffness of the shocks?
Also, I get a loud thump when I go over a bump with my camper on. No problem with this when riding empty. I attribute this to the overload springs barely touching the rubber stops on the frame and coming off the stops and slamming down on them when I hit a bump. Is this a reasonable explanation? If so, can anything be done about it? (thicker rubber stops, throw an extra 500 lbs. in the camper?)
