EZ Towing

Challenger 5th Wheel

I currently run the Edge for the 600 which has 3 settings. 20-40-70hp.

I tow only in the 20hp setting but I can still get the egt up to 1500 very easily. even when towing my gn empty. when towing the hills I can get up to 1500 (manifold temp) and easily keep it there with the box diconnected. . cummins says 1300 should be max. I even changed my gauge to make sure its right.

Ive read where guys are getting leaking injectors around 170,000 miles running pressure boxs. I will be at 170,000 in less than 2 years. I need a box that will give me the best performance with the least amount of egt increase. I will be adding an afe filter replacement and a bigger intake.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Talked to a guy today who sells the water/meth injection and he said it would not be practicle for me since I drive 100,000+ miles per year. He said a cool air intake, a torque tube, and a 5-6 inch exhaust would be my best bet. I unhooked my edge tonite. Ill be leaving for east Texas grossing around 31,000+- and my egt's on accellearation would set at 1500*until I reached highway speeds.

I was told by the guy (who owns a performance shop) that he has seen several trucks with #4 and #6 pistons with holes burned in them by 170,000. I don't need that. If heat becomes the failure of my cummins at less than 200,000 - I guess I'll buy a duramax.

Jn, did this person say what would be the problem with running the Water/Meth. injection 100K+ mi. a yr. ?? I'm running it towing RV's, and its working great. I would really like to know, cause I run over 100K a yr. also. Thanks,

Larry

jnelson, what is your boost and rpm with this high egt's? I wonder what is the cause of the 3-rd gen. high exhaust temps? I see this type of complaint all the time. When they first came out, I was disapointed to see the offset turbo mount. One of the best points of the turbo mount on an inline 6, was the center placement of the turbo. I feel that this offset on the 3-rd gen's. is part of the problem.

I run my EZ on 4 but I'm only towing 8500 or so, 565HO, AFE drop in with a few holes in the bottom of the aircleaner housing. I have yet to see over 1200 in 6th, I can pass 1300 in lower gears when towing in 6-8000 ft of elevation and I hold it past 2700, If I carry the hill at 2700 or less I'm fine. I tow about 25k a yr.

I'm now over 170k on my 2003 with about the same setup you have. I run on level 3 all the time. My weights will run from 15 to 30k depending on what I am hauling. I have lost my pressure pump, don't know if the Edge box had anything to do with it or not. Edge says no. Haven't had any injector problems at all. A few years ago I talked with Mark at TST and he said unless you were drag racing or sled pulling your water temp will shut you down if you are paying attention before you will hurt the engine with high egt. I used to farm and I know if the egt get high, the water temp will be right with it. I don't worry about getting up to speed, the temp will come back down when you put it on cruse. I've been doing this for a lot of miles now and have never had any engine temp related problems. Never had any engine problems at all as far as that goes. I certainly don't think a Duramax will give you better service than the Cummins. The only kind of diesel engine I've ever had in front of me has been a straight six, never a V-8. I'm kinda funny that way.

I put an Aeroturbine muffler on my '04. 5, seems to have dropped EGT temp about 50 to 100 degrees :D . There is a website for Aeroturbine with sound files, if you want to hear what they sound like.

One of my working partners had a '03 and he doesnt get near the high egt's I get.

Yogi - He said I would have to much trouble with it under constant use. I dont Know?

Are you happy with your setup? Can you turn it on and off? I would only need it when towing up hills and getting up to highway speeds. At highways speed my egt's are fine.

My best towing bomb is without a doubt my BD Exhaust Brake... makes those long steep downgrades a pleasure and really extends the life of your OEM service brakes.

Change your exhaust manifold with the ATS, it will flow better than your stock one. What boost #'s are you producing, boost and EGTS go hand in hand, low boost+high fuel= high egts, good boost+medium fuel = good egts. The turbo not only forces air into the motor it helps flow the exhaust out, lowering your temps, low boost means air restriction, in and out. I read that those rear cylinders are getting hot because of lack of good air flow, change your exhaust manifold!

My Friend - you have the Wrong rig.....

You said ... "Ill be leaving for east Texas grossing around 31,000+"

Unless this is modern math - 31,000 is way out of bounds for these trucks for over the road running!

trailer registerd for 22,200

truck registered @ 11,500

give me a GCVW of 33,700

That weight is good in the eyes of the law in all 50 states. Maybe not DC but I am my own warranty station.

Matches the manifold sounds like a good upgrade. Cool air in ------- hot air out

In some places -

Intentionally driving a vehicle so overloaded AND have an accident is not only financially a nightmare - if someone is harmed or killed - It Can BE A FELONY! I mean get out the vasoline... . If you can guarantee that you won't have an accident - Don't Have any insurance. In fact towing like this can and probably will VOID any insurance you have in case of an accident... . You run a huge chance and just vecause you can get by in so an such a place - times are changing.....

People have tried to argue this point with me hammersley. I am a commercial vehicle and I have commercial insurance. I am registered for 33,700 and I am completely legal. I have all I need to run all 49 and Canada. Ive been doing this for years just like 1,000's of other hot shot drivers. This topic was started for another reason - not to questions my ability haul heavy loads beyond manufacturer specs.

good day

jn, there is a toggle switch to turn the system on, & off, and an LED light that comes on when the pump runs. You adjust at what boost you want it to come on at, when you don't need it, just turn the sw. off. Matt is working on a switch that will turn it on at what ever egt you want it to actuate on at. I'm going to try one as soon as he has it ready. I think that will conserve water usage better. I was towing a heavy load across Wy. one day with 40+mph winds, and used 8 gal. water in about 285 mi. , but it kept the egt's down. It has dropped my egt's about 200+ deg. Now that its getting colder I will have to use windshield washer solvent, or mix methanol to keep from freezing.

Jn. . add a 8 or10 maybe a 15 gal tank for the water /meth mix in the bed and your all set for many miles, they make many styles and the least expensive are found at ag supply places they use them for small 4wheeler tank sprayers [northern tool has several sizes cheep]. . in your case you might just want water

IMHO the water / meth is a great way to control egt's. . however just make sure you turn it off and dry out the motor for a couple miles before shut down.
