My first trip to BlueRidge Mts. towing heavy this weekend. Running in second gear for several miles on winding hills. My 1300egts. My engine seemed to completely die and immediately running. Engine light symbol for electronic throttle control came on and then off. Engine ran fine after that. I get home and hooked up Smarty and has four codes.

I am going by the dealer today and show him the codes. I do know that I had run at 1300EGTs in second gear for maybe 2 miles when it happened.

What version of Smarty are you using?

Are you using the ME software?

The reason I asked is I never saw anything higher then 1200F and this was in 6 gear going up hill on interstate 40, in NC. I drop down to 5 gear and EGT's went down to 900 F. We were on a 6 or 7 % grade in the truck lanes around Black Mountain NC.

I need to check my CEL's every 1500 miles or so when the over head display lights up and will state "see dealer now catalyst is full". This is a known issue with the DPF deleted and I just read the CEL's to see if there is any issue and then clear the overhead. I am good for another 1500 or so miles until it dings again. In the last year I have never seen these codes since I installed my Smarty.

I am using the 14ME version set on catcher level 3 and all other parameters set to default. I am fully deleted and using the Glacier Diesel 2nd stage fuel filter 2 micron rated for added filtration.

Jim,

I travel the "old Fort" grade at Black Mtn. often. I run the standard Smarty with no deletes. I run #3 with turbo on #3. The Old Fort grade can be run at 50-55mph. Where I was at on Parkway you can only run 15-20mph in 2-3rd gear.

My RV/truck usually grosses 26,500#s.

Ken,

The tech at the dealer asked me the same thing and no I don't. At the same time all this happened when the engine took off it engaged the cooling fan. I am going to back my Smarty back to 30hp with timing while in the mtns. towing. That should lower my egts a little.

Rented a Ryder 28 foot box van earlier this year. Freightliner chassis with the 6. 7 and an auto trans. Had a bit extra cargo than anticipated (5 tons extra!) but the 6. 7 never really slowed down much. But I didn't drive it up Black Mtn either... ... ! Hope you are still under warranty, sounds EGRish to me.

CUMMINZ,

Are your batteries original equipment on your truck? The reason I ask, I have read that when the batteries start to loose power and are getting old they effect the ECM and the electrical out put on your truck. Thus when the engine was working and the EGT's were up in temperature the ECM may have been effect by the battery condition, recording these codes. From what I read almost all of the electrical components that can place a drain on the engine charging system would be working and pulling from the batteries also.

I would have them load check and see if they are up to specs. Just a suggestion may be a wild idea but?
