Hi -

Currently putsing to a truck stop -

Could you help with any ideas?????

Thanks

Shona

Got a call back when I sent the PM and talked to Havley, 99' 24V guys here are the symtoms he was and is experiencing. Driving down the road and it just quit without warning, lost all the power down to an idle, he shut the motor down once and took a while to get it back going, it's spuddering trying to run, temp is fine, oil pressure is fine, he checked all the connections at the VP and the fire wall and there all fine, TPS is working but he says he does have a check engine light on, lift pump is working fine and he drained the fuel filter but doesn't have a spare, as his wife said it will not get over 1000 RPM and when he called me he was doing 30 on the highway. Are all the fingers pointing to the VP44? If you guys can help him his cell phone number is 908-591-4547.

Sounds like the pump. A friend had the same thing happen while in Mexico. Same symptoms, would idle fine but wouldn't do anything over 1000rpm. He had to put a new pump on when he finally got home.

Hi -

Thanks for your posts - and Jim - thank you so much for spending the time to speak to Hadley.

So - FYI - if it helps its been 5000 miles since the last change.

When the guy in Mexico got back home (was he towed or did he drive slowly?) was there further damage to the truck?

Thanks - chugging slowly on 95... ... .

Called. . but no one available on the phone.....

before replacing Injection pump [wich well might be the issue]. . there is a test for the Injector pump grounding pins is

n the power dist box... but that is normally for a dead pump issue...

make sure the lift pump is in fact pumping as sometimes they block fuel from flowing / and partial block. . sound isn't a test. . check flow and or flow pressure. .

Made it

Well I decided to just go for it and basically idle home. CPU was still controlling idle(pulling it up to meet load) I could work my way up to 5th and crawl along at 30MPH 7 hour trip took 16. I have a new filter and am gonna try that once I check codes. By "pump" are you referring to the lift pump or VP44? I am hoping its not the later. I will check pressures and install filter tomorrow evening.

Thanks for any help

Hadley

another thing to test... disconnect the batteries for about 30 min after or while doing the filter change... your pump [injector] is in limp mode. . this may clear the mode and get it running again... .

if the lift pump will not pressure the system you may have to crack a few lines at the injectors and bleed the air... ... if no fuel flows from / to lift pump you can pressure the fuel tank a bit and force fuel to / through the filter [it make a time or two or three to get the system pressured up / air out ]

Dead truck

Sorry I moved this over to 24 valve engine section(no longer an emergency) turned out to be injection pump. Replaced the filter(5k miles) and lift pump(17PSI) as a mater or course. Previously replaced CPS for failure and TPS for same they fixed the problems. I have to say if you really want to spend some $$$ buy a Snap On MT2500 Scanner. It is really helpful.

thanks for the help

good call billgotthelf. I had a bad injector pump that kept on for 6 hours after first showing signs of quitting... thought it was real uncommon to die slow. Guess more common than I thought.
