First off... ..... Great Site!!!! I have spent many hours on here in the last two days.

I just bought a 92 D350 on Sunday and it had a sticker on it for this site so I joined yesterday. I have been reading thread after thread trying to figure out what I need to do first. I have already learned alot, but I hope you guys will help a diesel noob.

A little info on my truck. It is a 1992 D350 CTD(I learned today what that stands for) dually with a 12 valve motor and an automatic trans. It has 122K on the clock and is in wonderful condition. I bought this truck so that I could tow my 1990 FS Blazer around. It is Black and beautiful. I bought it from a guy that posts as Bruiser.

Info on me. My name is Steve. I live just north of Dallas. I have been into wheeling for a few years now and my trucks ability and my right foot weight has gotten to the point of needing a trailer to make sure I can get back home. The days of driving to the trail in a street legal vehicle are nearing an end. I recently got a trailer and decided I was tired of brrowing or renting a tow vehicle. I had seen this truck for sale before, and the oppertunity presented itself to make it mine. Always loved Mopar. Built a couple of sweet Dusters in the past.

Now you all know more about me than you ever wanted to, I have some questions.

I read the front end was weak. I was told the PO rebuilt mine but at 70 the steering wheel and dash jump up and down way too much. It gets worse if I try to push it up to 80.

I read about needing at least one EGT sensor and a transmission temp sensor or two. I read about 20 pages of that kind of stuff with alot of different opinions. My conclusion of what I read in a best case scenario would be to have a pre and post turbo EGT and a sensor in the output line of the trans and in the pan. I believe I remember someone saying that I could use a pipe from a 94 that had a provision for a switch for the trans. I must admit that I saw alot of nice fab work relocating the warning lights and putting gauges in its place. I think I will end up with a colum cover single pod and one on the a-pillar. Others will go lower in a generic mount.

What I did not see were part numbers. Both for the sensors and the pipe and the gauges used. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

One last thing on my very long first post. My motor is leaking oil around the area that the vacuum pump and power steering is mounted. Is the vacuum pump supposed to sit tight against the metal housing it mounts to? At the top of mine I can get a 16ga wire between the mating surfaces. I have not checked the bolt tightness yet, but I will before I drive the truck again. Any typical places to check?

TIA for the help, and thanks again for the site.

Leper

First off Welcome to the wacky farm you will enjoy the truck as much as we do our's . as for the leak I would start by checking to see if bolts are tight ?if not . sounds like its time to get Dirty :) and start wrenchin have fun and remember shinny side up greasy side down when yer wheelin .

Hi Leper. I'm new to this website too. It seems to be a great place to find the answers to your questions. I just bought a truck very similar to your's. Is your's an extended cab LE package? I've been curious recently if I got a good deal on my truck. If you don't mind sharing, what did you pay for yours? I paid $2,000 knowing that it needed a transmission overhaul. I have $3,500 into it now with a new transmission and various other items for state inspection purposes.

as for part numbers on gauges it all depends on what style you like... personally i like the autometer ultralite series but thats all opinion. check out genos garage you can order gauges they come with sending units and all.

TGiambro- I;d say you came out ahead overall, depending on body condition and miles, but still not a bad deal.

Leper- Welcome to the looney bin. You will be somewhat limited to what you can do for power output without upgrading your automatic transmission, but you will still find things you were content with that now "need fixing or upgrading. "

Geno's Garage I kept seeing references to Genos, but I could not find them. thanks for the garage part.

I'm really not looking to modify my engine at this point. Monitoring for problems so that the truck lasts is my goal right now. That is the reason for my gauge questions.

TG, I am hesitant to say that I paid $6K for my truck. You need to understand that except for a spot on the drivers fender, the black paint is still beautiful and the interior is the same way. I am going to fix the oil leak, fix the A/C, tint the windows, remove the jumpseats to install a small speakerbox in their place, and drive it all over.

Let me see if I can do this.

I looked at a few of these trucks and this one was, by far, the best looking and the lowest milage. Some of the others I looked at, including other makes, worried me that they were unreliable. Plus I had dealings with the owner before and I knew him from texas4x4.org.

I got my last one from fleetfilter.com, I don't have the P/N now but someone will chime in. Napa, Cummins and others carry that size filter.

I wanted to try the new Amsoil air filters, looks like a good product, dry filter that's cleanable.

Good looking truck and not even broken in. Welcome to the zoo.

I only use one pyrometer (EGT sensor). It is installed pre-turbo. Another one downstream is superfluous IMO.

I do use two trans fluid temp sensors & gages (trans out & pan). You could use two sensors, a switch and one gage, then flip back and forth.

I wish I'd kept track of the gage/sensor part numbers, but I didn't. I use all ISSPRO stuff & it works well. The two temp gages are on the A pillar and the other three (tach, egt, boost) are in a triple pod on top of the dash above the message center.

Welcome

Welcome to the jungle!! Nice ride you have there, I like the '78 in the background too. My Dad and I just finished a 1978 Lil Red Express restoration, now its time to start on my '52 1-ton Cummins project. Have fun with the CTD.
