First off... ..... Great Site!!!! I have spent many hours on here in the last two days.
I just bought a 92 D350 on Sunday and it had a sticker on it for this site so I joined yesterday. I have been reading thread after thread trying to figure out what I need to do first. I have already learned alot, but I hope you guys will help a diesel noob.
A little info on my truck. It is a 1992 D350 CTD(I learned today what that stands for) dually with a 12 valve motor and an automatic trans. It has 122K on the clock and is in wonderful condition. I bought this truck so that I could tow my 1990 FS Blazer around. It is Black and beautiful. I bought it from a guy that posts as Bruiser.
Info on me. My name is Steve. I live just north of Dallas. I have been into wheeling for a few years now and my trucks ability and my right foot weight has gotten to the point of needing a trailer to make sure I can get back home. The days of driving to the trail in a street legal vehicle are nearing an end. I recently got a trailer and decided I was tired of brrowing or renting a tow vehicle. I had seen this truck for sale before, and the oppertunity presented itself to make it mine. Always loved Mopar. Built a couple of sweet Dusters in the past.
Now you all know more about me than you ever wanted to, I have some questions.
I read the front end was weak. I was told the PO rebuilt mine but at 70 the steering wheel and dash jump up and down way too much. It gets worse if I try to push it up to 80.
I read about needing at least one EGT sensor and a transmission temp sensor or two. I read about 20 pages of that kind of stuff with alot of different opinions. My conclusion of what I read in a best case scenario would be to have a pre and post turbo EGT and a sensor in the output line of the trans and in the pan. I believe I remember someone saying that I could use a pipe from a 94 that had a provision for a switch for the trans. I must admit that I saw alot of nice fab work relocating the warning lights and putting gauges in its place. I think I will end up with a colum cover single pod and one on the a-pillar. Others will go lower in a generic mount.
What I did not see were part numbers. Both for the sensors and the pipe and the gauges used. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
One last thing on my very long first post. My motor is leaking oil around the area that the vacuum pump and power steering is mounted. Is the vacuum pump supposed to sit tight against the metal housing it mounts to? At the top of mine I can get a 16ga wire between the mating surfaces. I have not checked the bolt tightness yet, but I will before I drive the truck again. Any typical places to check?
TIA for the help, and thanks again for the site.
