Rear wheel cylinder upgrade?

(hopefully). It's a Silver 4x4 QC SWB SLT. One thing I don't like is that it has the Camper package. I was thinking I saw where I could just take out the extra rear leaf, is this true? Thanks for the help!

Brakes

Look under the truck and make sure it has "4 wheel disc brakes". If it does not I would look for another. My '95 would not stop even 50% as good or as straight as my '01. 5. Other then that I am very happy with my truck :D . Sam.

You can easily remove the overload springs if you wish, and the package will give you the rear stabilizer as well. I did notice a difference without them, but others say they don't. Personal preference I guess, but they can come out easily if you don't want them. The rear disc's are nice too,on the later model 2001's.

The only reason I don't care for it is that I'll do more hitch towing than anything else. Won't use 5th wheel, and won't use camper. I am concerned about ride quality if I did take that leaf out. Also like the truck to sit more level, and don't want to raise the front. This is a new model 01. 5. Thanks for any and all help guys!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that extra spring justs sits there not contacting anything until there is enough of a load that it come into play. I also don't believe that it affects the ride height either if it's there or not. My truck is a 3500, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

SLittle-you are correct, the overloads just sorta sit there, but they d make the ride a little more harsh, only when unloaded.

The overload will not affect ride height, except they will help keep the rear up when loaded heavily.

Dixie, the springs will help a little when hitch towing, especially if you are tongue heavy. If you don't like them take em out, they will not change the truck's ride height, and it will ride just a little softer. Only way to level the truck is raise the front,or drop the rear a bit. There is a smaller rear spring block available for that purpose from chrysler. See here http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/tsb/2001/02-001-01.htm

I have the camper package on my 01' and i dont notice any ride harshness. I never tow or haul anything, but i am glad i have the extra spring if and when i do haul anything.

Sway bar

I don't tow or haul, either. I ordered the camper pkg. 'cause I wanted the sway bar. The pkg. was cheaper on factory order than buying an aftermarket sway bar, like Hellwig. It's not as hefty as the Hellwig, but it works fine.

My silver 2001

I now have just over 2000 miles on my Ram. Never see so many lite bright met silver trucks till you buy one. I got the Auto , Tow, Camper and 265 tires with mine. I found 60 psi in front and 40 psi in back did so much for the ride being a Quad Cab Short Box and all. Font was what they call wanting to wash out/ sway and back was like rock hard ride. You'll be real happy with the set up plus it costs way more to add it later.

I got mine with the camper package but ditched the overloads. I got tired of them slap-bumbing the stops on big bumps. I measure up the U-bolts and had new ones made for $4 apiece and I yanked the overloads plus the spacers on my 2wd. It helped the ride quality noticeably, less shaking from the back end on rough roads due to less unsprung weight. Those suckers are heavy! Will never put them back in that's for sure.

I wouldn't run without mine... my RV trailer seems to be hitch-heavy, it can move the back end of my 3500 around a bit. Enough to feel it, even with an equalizer hitch. The truck rides like a luxury car, unloaded, so I see no reason to take 'em out. Vaughn and others have a different opinion. I guess the only thing to do is drive it on all kinds of roads, then take 'em out if you don't like 'em. At least you'll still have the sway bar.

Another 2 cents worth

with a topper, some tools, Horseshoe (tossin) set & sledge hammer, dog cage and assorted other junk in the bed, I think the camper pkg works just right on mine.

But with or without the overloads, I'm bettin you'll be darn happy!

Enjoy!

:D

new '01

i now have 5k on my new bright silver metallic 2500 QC 4X4 SB. mine has the camper package on it, and i don't think it affects the ride much. i figure it's always there if i want to load the truck heavier. btw, dixiedawg, where in ga are you? my new 2500 has been nearly flawless. (couple of switches have been bad) things keep falling off or getting stolen or running away, though. silencer ring, air snorkel, muffler, etc. i too suspect a conspiracy, or poor quality parts. anyway, buy it if you can, and ENJOY!!

Thanks guys for all the responses! All have been helpful.

Howdy fellow redneck! :D I'm just north of you in Dalton. Hoping to get my truck this weekend from Marietta Dodge.

Y'all have a good'un!
