Left work yesterday and my freshly rebuilt, 10 mnths ago, 47re would not shift out of 1st gear. Tried neutral, reverse and park, they all worked fine. drove a little farther and still no shift out of 1st. Tried this about 3 more times.

Pulled over and check the fluid, level good, checked for leaks or wires unplugged. Everything looked good.

About half a mile and 4 stops later it started to up shift into 2nd then drive. So off to the house I went. It did seem like it stayed in 1st longer than normal but did up shift and got me home.

Next morning I let it sit and warm up for 15min or so and off to the transmission shop I go. This time is shifted just fine. The guys at the transmission shop said it shifted just fine on their test drive and they couldn’t find any internal issues. They said it looked to be electrical issues like maybe the TPS. But they recommended another shop down the road to chase electrical problems.

Don’t know if I am going to wait for the “other” shop to look at it when it more than likely is the TPS.

Any suggestions or ideas before I spend $200 at Genos for a new TPS? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Robert,

Before you do anything drastic, I'd recommend buying a transmission output shaft speed sensor for around $20 from your local auto parts stare, and if this problem happens again, swap it out. The sensor is located in the tail housing of the transmission on the drivers side. It literally takes 2 minutes to unplug the connector, unscrew the old one using a wrench, and then put the new one in.

The PCM uses the transmission output shaft speed signal to decide when to command a shift.

Good luck,

John L.

John, Thank you for the speed sensor idea.

I appreciate the tug on the reins. I get excited too fast and start thinking big first and forget to start with the smaller easier items.

I will get one to have in case it happens again.

The next thing to think about would be the governor solenoid and transducer. They and the output shaft speed sensor are the typical problems with hang shifts.

hmmm..... if the speedometer works, there souldn't be a problem due to the speedsenson on transmission. also , I think upshift between 1,2,3 and reverse is pure hydralic regulated. the overdrive and lockup is elecrtical activated.

I don't know about upshift problems, but I used an transmissionoil once that was not fit for my truck. When the transmission start bull****ting,it bad wrong oil or clogged filter.

anyway,my symptons was that it would not go into overdrive, lockup and it had hard time getting as low as in 1 gear, sometimes it just wouldn't go lower than 2. gear.
